Vanderbilt Three Keys: Ole Miss

Three-keys-Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt Commodores host Ole Miss on Saturday at Vanderbilt Stadium. Here are your three keys to a Commodore win over the Rebels.

By Don Yates

Pressure Jordan Ta’amu

Averaging over 335 yards per game passing, Ta’amu is what makes the Ole Miss offensive machine go. Ta’amu’s top target is 6-foot-1, 225 pound A.J. Brown who has 72 catches. He’s like a fullback with great speed after he catches the ball. Ta’amu is kind of banged up so it makes sense to keep him scrambling and running for his life.

Balanced offense

Yes, Vandy needs Ke’Shawn Vaughn to run wild but Ole Miss is even more horrendous against the pass than they are against the run. The Dores also need to throw to keep the Rebel defense honest and make for bigger gains for Vaughn when he does run.

Roll the Dice

The Ole Miss offense is going to score points.. lots of points. They are Missouri’s offense on steroids. Every effort should be made to keep the ball away from their offense. So what if a fake punt fails on your own 35? The Rebs were probably going to score anyway, even if their drive had started on their own 15 (see Mizzou’s 99-yard drive). Fake punts, onside kicks, and just plain going for it on fourth down need to be the rule of the day.

Forget winning the manly way, we need to win this one. We can do manly against UT.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 6:30 pm CT and can be seen on the SEC Network.
