Ole Miss Three Keys: Kentucky

Ole Miss three keys

Ole Miss visits Kentucky on Saturday in Lexington. Here are your three keys to a Rebel victory over the Wildcats.

By Don Yates

1 – Play better defense

Defense doesn’t appear to be a high priority at Ole Miss. Last weekend in Oxford the Florida Gators offense had a recording setting day. Florida set a school record for total yards against an SEC opponent in its season-opening win amassing 642 yards total offense including 446 passing and 196 rushing yards. Maybe it’s just that Florida’s offense is very good this season. Regardless of the reason for the breakdown, it needs to be corrected and quickly. The Rebels will be going to against a very angry Kentucky team basically gave away a win at Auburn last weekend with some help from the officials.

2 – Keep bombing

While Ole Miss’ defense was a disaster, the Rebel offense was clicking to the tune of 35 points. The Rebels currently lead the nation in third-down conversion rate at over 64%. Not bad at all. Against a supposedly very good Florida defense, quarterback Matt Corral passed for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns. Rebel running back Jerrion Ealy ran for just under 80 yards and a TD, and wide receiver Elijah Moore caught 10 passes for 227 yards. All the Rebel staff needs to do now is fine-tune the offense and keep a good thing going.

3 – Terry Wilson frustration

Kentucky fans were dancing in the streets over having Terry Wilson, who led the Cats to 10 wins in 2018, back from injury. However, in his first game back Wilson appeared to be a little rusty. Wilson did pass for 237 yards and a touchdown. However, he was intercepted once and, despite being very mobile, was sacked twice. The Ole Miss defense needs to try to continue Wilson’s rustyness. If the Rebels can force a turnover or two that will provide more opportunities for the Rebel’s very solid offense to score.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 3:00 PM CT (4:00 PM ET). Watch on the SEC Alternate Network.
