Tennessee Football Three Keys: Georgia State

The Tennessee Volunteers host Georgia State on Saturday in Knoxville. Here are you three keys to a Tennessee victory.

Key 1 – Don’t Sleep on GSU

Yes, Georgia State struggled (2-10 record) in 2018 but, hey, this isn’t 2018 anymore. Simply put, GSU has a bunch of players back for this season including the starting quarterback, running back and just about all the receivers. It would be hard to picture the Vols overlooking any team they could face in a season opener, so sleeping on GSU is not likely but you never know.

Key 2 – Play Clean Ball

No team will play as sloppy of a football game as what we watched in the Power Conference opening game between Miami and Florida about a week ago. Turnovers, stupid penalties and dumb decisions by coaches. We likely won’t see colossal screwups, like Miami-Florida, in this game. However, sometimes it just takes one turnover or dumb decision to turn a ball game the other way. Florida was lucky in that Miami game. The Vols aren’t to the position yet where they can have multiple major screwups and survive with to win.

Key 3 – Guarantano Shines

Jarrett Guarantano has been a decent quarterback for Tennessee. In particular, his over 300-yard passing game at Auburn last season was a thing of beauty. While Guarantano did improve some from 2017 to 2018, especially in his touchdown to interception ratio, he still has a way to go to help get the Vols to the next level. He’s been sitting at about a 62 percent completion percentage for the last two seasons. Hopefully, he can get that up to about 70 percent this season starting with this game.

This is a game that Tennessee should win by 20 or more if they follow these three keys.
