Scouting Report

Kentucky (24-6, 14-3 SEC) fell to Tennessee 81-73 on Tuesday night at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Tyrese Maxey led the Wildcats with 21 points. Tennessee’s John Fulkerson paced the Vols with 27 points. This game was fairly close statistically. The Vols did shoot a little better from both 3-point range and from the field. Tennessee had five more rebounds than UK. Sometimes the ball just bounces the right way for one side and the wrong way for the other.

Kentucky is averaging 66 points per game which is fifth in the SEC. The Wildcats allow opponents 74.5 points a contest (6th/SEC). Where Wildcats really make their money is in field goal defense. The Cats allow opponents to make just 39% of these shots. Kentucky is No. 1 in the league in free throw shooting (79.6%).

Immanuel Quickley (16.3 ppg) is the Wildcats leading scorer. The Cats also have Tyrese Maxey, Nick Richards and Ashton Hagans averaging in double digits. Richards is the team’s top rebounder (7.8 rpg).

Florida (19-11, 11-6 SEC) defeated Georgia 68-54 on Wednesday night in Athens. Keyontae Johnson led the Gators with 18 points. Johnson also pulled down 11 rebounds. Georgia’s Anthony Edwards topped the Bulldogs with 14 points. Georgia had twice as many turnovers as the Gators (16-8). This was big because it created more offensive possessions for Florida enabling the Gators to take and make more shots than Georgia.

Florida averages 71.9 points a contest (9th/SEC). The Gators defensively allow opponents an average of 65.9 point per contest. Florida is second in the SEC in 3-point shooting (34.4%). Field goal accuracy is another stat category that the Gators excel in (45.6%/4th SEC). Florida is fifth in the league in rebounding margin (+3.5).

Keyontae Johnson leads the Gators in scoring (14 ppg). Kerry Blackshear, Andrew Nembhard and Noah Locke also average in double figures for the Gators. Blackshear leads the team in rebounds (7.6 rpg).

This is another hard to pick game. Both of these teams are almost certain to make the NCAA. Whichever team wins this game will certainly enhance its Big Dance resume. This one is a draw. Normally we pick the home team for a draw but Kentucky has been very good playing on the road this season against good teams. The Gators will be bouncing off the walls for this one (like every UK opponent).
