Scouting Report
Alabama (14-12, 6-7 SEC) fell to Texas A&M 74-68 on Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa. Quenton Jackson led the Aggies with 20 points while Jaden Shackleford paced the Tide with 24 points. A&M shot 17 more free throws than Bama which was the key difference statistically in this game. Alabama had three more made field goals and five more 3-pointers but it wasn’t enough to overcome the disparity in free throws. Rarely do you see a home team in the SEC have this big of a disparity in free throws.
Kira Lewis Jr. leads the Tide in scoring averaging 17.5 points per game. John Petty, Jr. is not far behind Lewis at 15.0 points a contest. Petty leads the Tide in rebounding pulling down over 7 a game. Bama is No. 1 in the SEC in scoring offense (82.6 ppg). The Crimson Tide is dead last in scoring defense, however, allowing 78.8 points a contest. The Tide is also No. 1 in the SEC in 3-point shooting hitting 35.2%. Bama has made more 3-point shots than any other team in the SEC with 285.
Ole Miss (13-13, 4-9 SEC) fell to Missouri 71-68 on Tuesday night in Columbia, Mo. Guard Breein Tyree led the Rebels with 29 points. Mizzou’s Xavier Pinson paced all scorers with 32 points. Mizzou’s double number of made 3-pointers (6 to 3) proved to be the difference in the game. The two teams had the same number of made field goals (21) and free throws (23).
The Rebel’s Breein Tyree (20.3 ppg) is the team’s leading scorer. Blake Hinson (10.3 ppg), Devontae Shuler (11.3 ppg) and KJ Buffen (9.9 ppg) are the Rebel other top scorers. Buffen is also the Rebels top rebounder averaging 6.1 boards a game.
Ole Miss is No. 11 in scoring offense (69.4 ppg) in the SEC. They rank seventh in the conference in scoring defense (67.2 ppg). The Rebels are sixth in the SEC in 3-point shooting accuracy (32.7%) and second in the conference in 3-point shooting defense (38.1%). The Rebels are seventh in the conference in assists with 338 so far this season. Assist to turnover ratio (4th, 1.0) is another stat in which the Rebels excel. The Rebels are 14th in the league in blocked shots (2.7 bpg).
This one could go either way but Ole Miss plays much better at home. The home loss to Texas A&M might have the Crimson Tide realizing that their NCAA hopes have been vanquished.
