Scouting Report
Arkansas (16-6, 4-5 SEC) fell to Auburn 79-76 in overtime on Tuesday in Fayetteville. Arkansas had a double digit lead with 7 minutes left in the game but the Tigers battled back to force an overtime period. Mason Jones scored all seven of the Razorbacks’ points in overtime but it wasn’t enough. Jones was Arkansas’ leading scorer with an impressive 40 points. Samir Doughty led the Tigers with 23.
Jones (20.7 ppg) is the Hog’s leader in scoring. Sharp-shooting Isaiah Joe (16.0 ppg) is the second leading points producer. Joe has 72 made threes so far this season. Jones also leads the Hogs in rebounds (6.2 rpg).
Arkansas scores an average of 74.7 points per game (6th SEC). Defensively, they allow 65.3 points per contest (4th SEC). The Hogs like to shoot threes. They have taken 569 attempts from beyond the arc so far this season. The Hogs not only can shoot the three, they can defend it. Arkansas is No. 1 in the conference in 3-point shooting defense allowing just 24.8% of shots to be made. Arkansas also leads the league in steals averaging 8.8 of those per game.
Missouri (10-12, 2-7 SEC) fell to Texas A&M 68-51 on Tuesday in College Station. Except for a brief period in the first half, Texas A&M led the entire game. The Aggies’ stiffling defense limited the Tigers to just 18 points. The Aggies weren’t much better scoring just 25 points in the half. In the second half the A&M maintained its lead and went on to lead by as much as 20 points. Josh Nebo led the Aggies with 18 points. Mitchell Smith was Mizzou’s leading scorer with 9 points.
Guard Dru Smith leads the Tigers in scoring (11.3 ppg). He also is No. 1 in the SEC in steals with 46 and is over 91% for his free throws. Another Smith, forward Mitchell Smith, is the team’s leading rebounder (4.7 rpg). Missouri is among the worst teams in the SEC in scoring offense averaging just 65.3 points per contest. However, the Tigers are the third best team in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 63.5 points a game. Mizzou is No. 5 in the SEC in field goal defense (40.1%) and No. 5 in 3-point defense (29.8%).
Arkansas should be favored to win this game but watch out for the Tigers at home. They could be trouble because they are good defensively. If the Tiger’s offense has a good day things could get hairy for the Hogs. UPDATE: Isaiah Joe (16 ppg) of Arkansas is out for this game. That should swing the winning pendulum in Missouri’s direction.
