Commodores NET Rankings
The NET rankings have replaced RPI as a tool used by the NCAA selection committee to choose at-large tournament teams and to seed those receiving automatic bids. It's one of more than a dozen criteria used by the committee, but it's an important one. Below is the full set of rankings for all 356 D1 teams. Below that is a link to frequently asked questions from the NCAA website. Good luck with that. I've read it twice, and the best I can say is that I sorta understand a little bit of it. Sorta.
I do know that a team's offensive and defensive efficiency, the opponent and their opponents, the location and result of the game are part of it.
The rankings are updated daily and available to the public.

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
Thanks for the info. Not that I'll pass a pop quiz on it, but it does seem like an improvement. And for sure I now know that NET has replaced RPI, That seems to be the key point!

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
While the Dores have been trying to just mind their own business, other teams have been flying past them in the NET rankings. Vandy is now 97 after lingering in the 86-88 range for a while. The only SEC team behind us is Auburn at 107. They play at Belmont (77th) today at 7 on ESPN+, so if they win that one, they could go past us, too. Not that it matters this year. I just think it's something interesting to look at once in a while.

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
After yesterday's win at St.Josephs, the Dores moved up to 77 in the NET rankings. At one point they had dropped to 101 last week but moved back up to their previous best 86 before making a nice jump today. The 77 ranking puts them ahead of three SEC teams, Mississippi State (78), Auburn (88) and Florida (98).

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
I believe the NET Rankings are worse than the RPI.It ranks Buffalo (6-4..no road wins) #53; VCU (5-5..no road wins) #66; South Dakota St (4-7….1 road win against KC Roos) # 67 and North Texas (5-3..no road wins) # 75. In addition they have other powerhouses UNI (6-4) #45; and So Dakota (7-4) #47.

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
They've made it a lot more complicated than that, though. So much so that they can't even fully explain it. This from the NCAA release about the NET:Ndorefin wrote: ↑Wed Dec 22, 2021 2:17 pm I believe the NET Rankings are worse than the RPI.It ranks Buffalo (6-4..no road wins) #53; VCU (5-5..no road wins) #66; South Dakota St (4-7….1 road win against KC Roos) # 67 and North Texas (5-3..no road wins) # 75. "Why doesn’t the NCAA release the formula/algorithm being used for the NET?
The NET ranking is derived from a more complex algorithm rather than a simple formula with relatively straightforward components like RPI (which is 0.25 * [Win Pct] + 0.5 * [Opp Win Pct] + 0.25 * [Opp Opp Win Pct]). Adjusted Net Efficiency and Team Value Index are calculated using machine learning models implemented over many of lines of code, with the calculations adjusting with new results each day in such a way that there is no static “formula” for them."
I can't begin to explain a lot of it, though I am aware that part of it is the difference between offensive efficiency (points per possession) and defensive efficiency (opponent's points per possession) and lord knows what else. Any explanation that includes phrases like "machine learning models implemented over many lines of code" and "new results each day in such a way that there is no static formula for them" is not going to provide a satisfactory answer to my questions. Luckily, I've decided it holds no real importance in my life. I just like looking at it to get some idea of where Vandy stands in a common measurement for all D1 teams.

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
Read one of Stephen Hawking's books ( perhaps battled through would be a better description) "Brief Answers to the Big Questions". It was about as clear as this NET system to me. Nonetheless, Mikeadore, thanks for the post and the info.

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
In addition to Auburn and Fla, we have moved ahead of Ms State. We also moved ahead of VCU, but continue to trail everyone else I mentioned above, including So Dakota St, which has a losing record, but a win on the road against the Kansa City Roos.

Re: Commodores 86th in NET Rankings
Moved up from 80 to 78 with the Kentucky win. Auburn, the only SEC team currently behind us, moved from 101 to 92 with their win over UT.
Our strength of schedule dropped from 20 to 24. I feel certain that had nothing to do with who we played. There were just other teams that had tougher matchups and moved ahead of us in the category.

Stayed at 75 after the Georgia game. Our strength of schedule is 28.
Bama, our Sunday opponent, has a NET of 69. Auburn is still the only SEC team behind us at 95.
