I flat out don't like it.
The most glaring thing is that the text and artwork don't complement one another at all. Looks like it was done by a college administrator and not a graphic designer.
And as a stand-alone V? I much prefer this:
That oak leaf is clever dammit, and needs no updating. It immediately makes the V recognizable as referring to Vanderbilt over any other V-universities.

I'm afraid that barring some reconsideration by the Powers That Be, it's going to happen.
