Vanderbilt Three Keys: Nevada

Three-keys-Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt football hosts Nevada on Saturday at Vanderbilt Stadium. Here are your three keys to a Commodore victory over the Wolf Pack.

Run, Run and Run

Nevada’s defensive line averages about 6-2, 268 pounds. Vandy offensive line is huge and experienced. They should be able to plow through the Wolf Pack defensive line. Everyone loves to see passing but if you can run on a team, you run until they can stop you. Vandy should give the a good dose of Blasingame, Vaughn and Wakefield and wear down the Nevada defense. It’s hot in Nevada but not humid. It should be very muggy on Saturday more. Vandy get an edge running the ball.

Muzzle Mannix

Former Vanderbilt commit McLane Mannix, now a sophomore wide receiver for the Wolf Pack, has turned out to be a gem for Nevada. Last season as a freshman he caught 57 passes for 778 yards and six TDs. He’s off to a great start in 2018. Against Portland State on Saturday he caught four passes for 132 yards and three TDs. Mannix isn’t that big (5-9, 195) but he has some wheels on him. If he gets into open space you probably won’t be able to catch him.

Play clean football

This an obvious key but this is a game where Vanderbilt is favored by 12 points. If Vandy loses this game it will likely have been a game marred by turnovers and dumb attacks, like shoving the punter seconds after he has punted. Therefore the Commodores must protect the ball and be wise to avoid giving Nevada an opportunity to defeat its first SEC opponent ever. With wet weather a possibility on Saturday, it makes this key even more important.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 11 am CT. TV: SEC Network.
