The Vanderbilt Commodores will play in their ninth bowl game in the program’s history on Thursday when they battle the Baylor Bears in Houston.
Kyle Shurmur shines
Shurmur has steadily improved as the Commodores’ quarterback since his freshman season. He will be facing a mediocre at best Baylor defense. Shurmur needs to pass well otherwise the Bear defense will be able key on the improved Commodore running game. Vandy’s chances of winning drop significantly if they become one dimensional.
Defense stifles Bear attack
According to the talking heads, Vandy and the Bears are about even offensively, each allowing opponents about 25 points per game. Of course, you must consider that in the Big 12, good defenses are a rarity. However, the Vandy defense needs to establish itself early and make a statement to Baylor that yards are going to be tough to get.
Play clean ball
On paper the Commodores should be the clear favorite but don’t tell the team. We all know that mishaps like interceptions, fumbles, blown assignments, and dumb penalties can swing the pendulum in favor of the underdog. This will likely not be a cakewalk. The Commodores need to play hard, stay focused and avoid trying to be super human.
Thursday’s game kicks off at 8 pm CT and can be seen on ESPN.
