Redus, a north Alabama native who played collegiately at South Alabama, comes to the Commodores after serving as an assistant at Delta State, a perennial Division II power located in Cleveland, Miss. He served previously on staff at the University of West Georgia.

“I’m super excited about the opportunity, to work with someone of Stephanie’s magnitude and a chance to work at a place like Vanderbilt with its great tradition in women’s basketball. I’m just very thankful to join Stephanie’s staff and do everything I can to help the program,” Redus said.

In Redus, White believes the Commodores have attracted one of the top young coaches in women’s basketball to West End.

“We are excited to add Gary to our coaching staff. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and a great basketball mind, as well as a drive and hunger to learn and grow,” White said. “Gary’s a people person and his ability to build and maintain relationships allows him to fit right in with our program.”

Redus, the son of longtime Major League Baseball player Gary Redus, spent one year at Delta State under longtime head coach Craig Roden.

Redus entered the coaching ranks in 2016-17, serving as a graduate assistant West Georgia under head coach Scott Groninger. He helped develop UWG’s post players while assisting with game plan and practice development.

A native of Decatur, Ala., Redus is a 2011 graduate of South Alabama where he earned a degree health education. As a guard/forward for the Jaguars, he averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, and was a two-time member of the Sun Belt Conference’s All-Academic Team.

Redus played professional basketball in China, Mexico, Venezuela and Iraq from (2011-2015) before embarking on a career in coaching.

He is the son of Gary and Minnie Redus. His father played 13 seasons of Major League Baseball, including stops with Pittsburgh, Texas and Cincinnati.

Redus and his fiancé, Tiffany Blackmon of Gastonia, N.C., plan to wed in April.

White promotes Kelly Komara to associate head coach

White also announced the promotion of Kelly Komara, who is entering her third year on the Vanderbilt staff. Komara will be elevated to associate head coach for the Commodores.

Komara, who has focused much of her attention on Vanderbilt guards in her first two years on campus, helped first-year guard Chelsie Hall earn a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team in 2017-18. Hall averaged 11.9 points per game and started every game as a freshman.

“Kelly is a winner and we are blessed to share this journey with her,” White said. “She had earned this opportunity through her hard work, passion for the game, and love of our program.

A standout player at Purdue from 1998-2002, Komara and White were teammates on the 1999 Purdue team that captured the NCAA championship.
