Georgia gains huge in-state commit in Amarius Mims

Georgia Recruiting Update

There are some commitments that are just bigger than others. In the case of Amarius Mims committing to the Georgia Bulldogs and their Class of 2021, this is a statement that can be made both figuratively and literally.

Mims is a giant human being. The Bleckley County (Cochran, GA) High School star stands at 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have Mims as a 5-star prospect. He is ranked as the No. 7 player in the nation, the No. 3 OT and the No. 1 player in the recruit rich state of Georgia.

The scouting reports all place Mims as a guy who will start on the Bulldogs’ offensive line for multiple years and a player that will eventually transition to the NFL as a high draft pick. What most excites scouts about Mims are the things you can’t teach. Anyone can get stronger and anyone can be taught better technique. What you can’t teach is his rare combination of size, arm length, and hand size, aspects that often make separating from the very good to the elite just a little bit easier.

Mims’ game tape supports this theory. The ‘man against boys’ trope is used too often, but it is hard to put in any other terms here. Mims is so big and so dominant at the high school level that it is almost difficult to know how good he is. If he locks on, then the battle is over. Getting inside on Mims is almost impossible and even the best pass rushers are thwarted by his huge radius and his athletic feet.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Amarius Mims’ recruitment was his choice of his home state school over the team he grew up a fan of. Mims could easily have committed to Alabama and Nick Saban, but instead chose Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs. It is such a fine line in the SEC in the battle to win recruits and how to turn a player to your program and it is these battles that will shape the direction of the conference in the years to come. With Mims onboard, this round goes to Georgia.
