Gamecock running back commit “dances through defenders”

South Carolina Recruiting Update

South Carolina recently picked up an exciting commit when Lee County (Leesburg, Geo.) running back Caleb McDowell pledged to the program for the class of 2021.

Caleb McDowell’s recruitment has been anything but ordinary as he originally committed to North Carolina State before backing out of that decision back on June 3. The Wolfpack’s loss is the Gamecocks’ gain, with the 5-foot-10, 170-pound excitement machine now looking destined to play he college ball in Columbia.

McDowell is a 3-star recruit who ranks as the No. 835 player in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He lands as the No. 60 rated RB in the class and the No. 71 player from the state of Georgia. The 247Sports recruiting service likes McDowell a fair bit better than those averaged numbers, with the site ranking him as the No. 43 RB in the class and the No. 50 player in his state.

The seventh member of the South Carolina recruiting class, McDowell starred as a two-way player as he led Lee County to an 11-2 record last fall. At South Carolina, he is likely to see time in the return game along with situational work as a running back or even a slot receiver. He doesn’t have the typical frame of an every-down back, but as you can see in this video he is a strong runner who is incredibly tough to put down in space.

McDowell’s jets are in evidence from the very first play of the video below where he burns half a team down the sideline on a play he has no right scoring on. Next is a punt return that looks like Dante Hall in his days with the Kansas City Chiefs as McDowell dances and power through defenders. Everything McDowell does just seems to happen at a faster pace than anyone else on the field and it is that ability to score on any play that will make this dynamic player a hit in the SEC.
