Player Evaluation: Georgia commit CJ Allen

Georgia Recruiting Update

Kirby Smart continues to build his class of 2023 defense and the latest addition is 4-star recruit CJ Allen from within the state of Georgia.

CJ Allen is a 6-foot-1, 217-pound linebacker out of Lamar County Comprehensive (Barnesville, GA) High School. He is rated by the 247Sports Composite Rankings as the No. 167 player in the class, the No. 10 linebacker, and the No. 15 player in Georgia.

Interestingly, the 247Sports recruiters love Allen. They have him as the No. 60 player nationally, the No. 3 linebacker, and the No. 3 player in Georgia. Allen is the twelfth player in the class to verbally commit to the Bulldogs and he chose the school over offers from SEC foes like Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee.

Allen has a solid athletic background outside of football. He ran track and was part of the basketball roster as a junior where he averaged 7.7 points per game. We have seen how diverse athletic backgrounds make great football players and looking at the tape below of Allen you can yet again see that in play.

Allen played both ways as a junior. He rushed for almost 1,100 yards and 16 touchdowns, but he has been recruited for his defensive work where he had 91 tackles and three interceptions.
The two plays starting at 0:15 are great. The first is a simple scoop and score, but it is the acceleration and instincts that Allen shows to be in the right place that are excellent.

The second play is even better. An opposing running back looks to be taking the ball to the house. Allen is five yards behind and on the half-turn when he hits the burners, but the way he runs down the back with 40 yards of full-on effort and commitment is what any coach would want to see from a middle linebacker.

The play after that is also very impressive as Allen shows unexpected hops – weighed down by football pads – to soar in spike a pass over the middle out of the air. If he is able to do that in the SEC and disrupt the short passing game over the middle then he will be huge for Georgia.
