The Tennessee Vols had a strong offensive season in 2021 and that is already paying dividends in the recruiting game. The Vols landed an impressive piece for their class of 2023 on Sunday with the news that 4-star tight end Ethan Davis has pledged to play college football in Knoxville.

Davis – 6-foot-4, 220 pound tight end out of Collins Hill (Suwanee, GA) High School – will immediately be a weapon in Josh Heupel’s offense. He is rated by the 247Sports Composite Ranking as the No. 112 player in the country, the No. 7 tight end, and the No. 11 player in Georgia. Davis is the second recruit Tennessee has landed in the 2023 class and both players are from Georgia. This shows that Heupel’s program is capable of making a play for big-time recruits in rival states already.
Davis is a modern-style tight end who can line up either in tight or out at a wide receiver spot. He is a two-sport star that plays basketball along with football and that should give some idea of his body type and the way that the Vols will use him. Tennessee tight ends had 31 catches and four touchdowns on the year and Heupel would love to see those (already solid) numbers improve going forwards.
The video below shows what the Vols will be getting in Davis. The first play is all ball skills as Davis is able to elevate and make a catch by high pointing the ball over the top of a defender. Further plays show how effective Davis is as a red zone threat and target as he is able to use his size and range to catch passes that others with a more limited catch radius wouldn’t get close to. The fourth play of the video is a personal favorite as Davis catches the ball, shows surprising agility to juke one defender, then just powers forward with other tacklers hanging off of his body.
