The Arkansas Razorbacks were one of the nicest surprises in the SEC last season. The hogs just added another stellar player who will help them get even better.
The Hogs – who little was expected of before the season began – rallied under head coach Sam Pittman to a 9-4 record and a third-place finish in the brutal SEC West. Pittman has continued that momentum into the recruiting sphere and picked up another potentially important piece in his class of 2023 earlier this week.
Carson Dean is a 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher out of Hebron (Carrollton, TX) High School. He is a rising prospect that some recruiting services already have ranked at the 4-star level. He is ranked as the No. 428 player in the class, the No. 35 edge rusher, and the No. 72 player in Texas on the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Dean committed to Arkansas over offers from schools such as Baylor, Houston, and LSU, though some of the even bigger hitters in Texas and the SEC were starting to show interest.
Dean is an explosive athlete that is only going to get more powerful when in a college strength and conditioning program. He already owns a verified 10.7 100-meter dash and as a junior he was a machine as a pass rusher. He had 86 tackles, 25+ tackles for a loss, 10 sacks, and even an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
In his film below you can see Dean is a man among boys as a high school prospect. The second play – the aforementioned pick-six – is a perfect example of how to defend as a big man in space. The read is great, but the athletic ability to get high and make the interception is astonishing. The next play (play three in the film) might be the best of them all. Most players struggle to defend one aspect of an option play, but on this one Dean plays both the quarterback and running back. He plays it perfectly, using his instincts to give the play no chance to develop before monstering the running back for a huge loss.
