Player Evaluation: Tennessee Commit Marquarius White

Tennessee Recruiting Update

The Tennessee Vols picked up a commitment on Thursday as 3-star wide receiver became the latest player to buy into Josh Heupel’s makeover of the program.

White – who comes out of Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, AL) High School – is the No. 522 player in the class of 2022, the No. 71 wide receiver, and the No. 21 player in Alabama per the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 5-foot-10, 155-pounder chose to pledge to Tennessee ahead of his other two finalists, Louisville and Virginia Tech.

White is a burner and he makes up for his light frame with his outstanding speed. He claims to have been closed at an amazing 4.37 in the 40-yard-dash and he competes for his high school in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. He will provide instant speed to the Tennessee wide receiver corps and he will likely also have a chance to prove his worth as a kick returner because with that speed he will be gone as soon as he hits a seam.

In the video below you can see the type of attributes that White will bring to the deep ball offense that Heupel is known for wanting to use. The very first play is a dynamic kick return where White only needs to make one cut – a cut that barely slows him down – to get into open field and hit the gas. The second is a slant that is actually overthrown, but White has the leaping ability and hands to pull in the ball before winning a footrace down the middle of the field where no defender was ever going to get near him. The third is an underthrown ball where White shows outstanding vision and reactions to get back to the ball and make the catch before dashing off for another score.

Players like White make their quarterback look better. This is what he will be bringing to Knoxville soon.
