Player Evalution: Alabama Commit Elijah Brown

Alabama recruiting update

It was yet another win for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the recruiting war on Friday as 4-star tight end Elijah Brown out of Wayne (Dayton, OH) High School announced he had committed to the program.

A big-time class of 2022 recruit, Brown is ranked as the No. 277 player in the nation per the 247Sports Composite, the No. 13 tight end in the class, and the No. 11 player in the state of Ohio.

Brown – who chose Alabama over offers from the likes of Auburn, LSU, and Wisconsin – had one very specific reason for choosing to play his college football in Tuscaloosa. “Championships, for sure,” he told BamaOnLine last year of what intrigues him about the Tide. “The winning attitude they have. They dominate college football.”

Those words were said before Alabama took the whole of the FBS back to school this past season and that can only have added to the lure of Saban’s program for Brown.

In the video below you can see how the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder uses his size and athleticism to overwhelm defenders on the field. Brown is outstanding at catching the ball with his hands and not his body – something a lot of high school tight ends struggle with. This both stops the ball bouncing off of his body incomplete and also keeps the ball at a further point from the defender meaning there is less chance of a pass being broken up.

On the first play, it is easy to see how well Brown moves for his size and how hard he is to bring down as three different defenders either can’t catch him or can’t get him to the turf before he reaches the end zone. Brown is also a tight end that can block, with a number of crushing hits being delivered throughout the video that speak of a willingness to get his hands dirty in the run game. This will be incredibly important at Alabama as Saban loves to establish the run behind a tight end that is versatile enough to be on the field no matter the play call.
