Ed Orgeron is still working on building LSU back after a National Title season was followed by one that was kind of disaster – albeit an expected one given the players that they lost for various reasons. Part of the rebuild is to bring in a solid haul in the class of 2022, and Orgeron has worked the recruiting trail keep 4-star cornerback Laterrance Welch home for college.

Welch – out of Acadiana (Lafayette, LA.) High School stands at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds. He is the No. 156 player in the nation per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the No. 18 cornerback, and the No. 9 player in the class of 2022 coming out of Louisiana. He picked the Tigers over offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Miami, and Texas. The commitment is also a big move for LSU who has eight hard commits and currently has the No. 1 recruiting class in the SEC for 2022 and the No. class in the country.

As you can see from the video, Welch is already polished as a cornerback. One of Welch’s greatest assets is his size. He is a long 6-foot-1, which gives him a great wingspan to battle against opposing wide receivers and make plays on the ball. He is also athletically gifted and is able to extend that frame even further thanks to his jumping ability.

Welch also hits hard for a high school cornerback – as you can see in the first clip – while the third clip is an outstanding example of exactly what it is that Welch does so well in coverage. It is a long play – one where he has to match footwork patterns with a wide receiver in a scramble drill. Not only is Welch able to stick to the receiver, but he is also able to time his break on the ball to get in front of the opposition player and knock the ball to the ground incomplete.
