Player Evaluation: Mississippi State Commit Ke’Travion Hargrove

Mississippi State Recruiting Update

One of the top remaining running backs in the class of 2021 made his commitment known on Wednesday as 4-star prospect Ke’Travion Hargrove out of Ruston (Ruston, LA) High School pledged his college future to Mike Leach and Mississippi State.

Hargrove is the No. 322 player in the class per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is the No. 15 running back and the No. 10 player in the talent-rich state of Louisiana. Hargrove picked the Bulldogs over a host of offers that included Penn State, Florida State, and South Carolina.

Hargrove marks the first true running back signed by Mississippi State in their 2021 class. He fills a need – the only other option at the position in the class is 3-star athlete Simeon Price – and Hargrove will enter a running back room – and rotation – with sophomores Jo’quavious Marks and Dillon Johnson as the lead players.

Hargrove does not have your typical running back body. At 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds he almost looks more like a wide receiver in the open field with his slashing and elegant running style. He is an outstanding fit as a back that can do a little bit of everything well, with his ability to change direction due to his balance and light feet allowing him to make defenders miss even in small spaces.

You can see this running style all throughout Hargrove’s video below. The very first play – and the second for that matter – shows that Hargrove can be a home run threat with his ability to beat the first defender and get out into the secondary. It is the subtle changes in direction in his running style that make Hargrove a dangerous player, his ability to get skinny in contact and explode through an arm tackle just by slightly shifting his hips. Hargrove will also be an asset in the passing game and in a Mike Leach system there is no limit to the damage he will do.
