SEC commit spotlight: Jalen Milroe

Nick Saban just has a way of getting his man. That is how things played out yet again in mid-August as Saban and Alabama flipped Jalen Milroe – one of the top dual-threat quarterback recruits in the class of 2021 – from Texas to the Crimson Tide.

Milroe is a 4-star prospect out of Katy (Texas) and he is the 19th commit in the Tide’s 2021 recruiting class. This is the second year running that Saban has flipped a top quarterback prospect after doing the same with Bryce Young – from USC to Bama – last fall. The quarterback position had been one Saban had been recruiting heavily after Drake Maye flipped his own pledge from Bama to North Carolina, leaving a giant hole in the recruiting class at (arguably) the most important position on the field.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pounder is the No. 82 player in the country in the class of 2021 according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is the No. 4 Dual quarterback in the class and he is the No. 10 player in the state of Texas.

Milroe’s 2019-20 season video is a little bit special and it doesn’t take long to see why the top schools in the country were all after his pledge. Milroe is a true dual-threat who is just as effective with his arm and his legs. He has great zip on the ball when firing it into tight windows and he has the strength to air it out as far downfield as he needs with seeming ease.

One aspect coaches will love is his ability to extend a play while keeping his eyes downfield. If he needs to take off he will – and do so effectively with his top-end speed – but he would rather buy time for wide receivers to get open. Teams will have to be careful when rushing Milroe though, as if he sees a seam in the middle he has the moves and athletic ability to score from anywhere on the field.
