Mississippi State Lands 4-Star QB Sawyer Robertson

Mississippi State Recruiting Update

Sometimes it is good to have a head coach that can recruit in areas he used to work. That is how it has worked out for Mississippi State as they have reached deep into the heart of Texas to pull 4-star prospect Sawyer Robertson out of Lubbock as one of the jewels of their 2021 recruiting class.

Lubbock is home to Texas Tech, the school where new Bulldogs head coach Mike Leach made his mark nationally in the 2000s. Given the wealth of quarterback talent in Texas it should come as no surprise that Leach is still tapping up his old pipelines. That is how he beat out the likes of Texas and USC for the ninth-best pro-style quarterback in the class according to composite rankings.

Robertson had a monster junior season for the Coronado High School Mustangs. He passed for just shy of 4,00 yards (3,950) to go along with 50 touchdowns at a completion rate of 62%. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder has the look of someone always destined to be a pro style passer, especially given that he will add weight to his frame when he gets to the Bulldogs facility and starts working out at the college level in the weight room.

Robertson is also a baseball star – he will play both sports in Starkville – and this shows in the way he delivers the ball in a pass happy system that is similar to that one Leach will run with the Bulldogs. As you can see from his highlight tape, Robertson loves to throw the ball deep and he is accurate to all the different sections of the field. He is also more than capable of making a pass rush miss and his long striding running style means he is deceptively quick on the edges. He also keeps his eyes downfield when beginning to scramble to look for a man getting open deep, a sure sign that his quarterback brain is making the most of his athletic talents.

Robertson is a player who will continue to move up the national rankings this fall and will make an impact in the SEC later this decade.
