Wright’s Renegade SEC Football Picks

Wright's Renegade SEC Picks

Five games on tap this week including a mouthwatering matchup between No. 2 LSU and No. 9 Auburn.
By Steve Wright

Last week’s record: 5-2
Overall record: 51-19
Exact score predicted: 0
Misses: Anyone that predicted Mizzou would lose in Nashville has my respect. Texas A&M over Ole Miss made more sense, but it still feels like Jimbo Fisher is struggling hard in College Station.
Closest Pick: LSU 40, Mississippi State 14. Actual score was LSU 36, Miss St 13. I’ll take a five point miss.

Mississippi State @ Texas A&M – This one might be a battle where the team that controls the clock better wins the game. Neither team is going to air it out and win a shootout, but both a well enough equipped to come out on top in a grind. Kellen Mond will be the difference here as the best skill position player on the field. Texas A&M 24, Mississippi State 20.
No. 9 Auburn @ No. 2 LSU – Joe Burrow has become a QB machine. He is hitting over 79% of his passes at over 11 yards per attempt. Those numbers are off the charts levels of insane. The Auburn D is outstanding in the front seven, but the secondary can be thrown on and Burrow will get his as the LSU/Alabama showdown draws ever closer. LSU 34, Auburn 21.
South Carolina @ Tennessee – The QB situation at Tennessee is beyond a mess. Brian Maurer can’t avoid concussions, Jarrett Guarantano called his own number and failed at the worst time, and TT Shrout completed 30% of his passes in relief of both. Neither of these teams can convert a third down so expect the punters to have sore legs on Sunday. South Carolina 21, Tennessee 20.
Arkansas @ No. 1 Alabama – Alabama without Tua Tagovailoa is a very different proposition to when he plays. Nick Saban’s team will still have NFL players in every position, but things were rough last week when Tua left the game. Against a better team this would be an issue, but Mac Jones will have enough at QB to beat an Arkansas team that has nothing going on offense under the embattled Chad Morris. Alabama 42, Arkansas 13.
Mizzou @ Kentucky – Kelly Bryant can’t be as ineffective as he was against Vanderbilt for Mizzou to win games. Getting the ground game going against a good but not great Kentucky D will allow Bryant to do his thing in typical duel-threat fashion. Emergency Kentucky QB Lynn Bowden is a blast to watch – and Mizzou is stunningly bad outside of Columbia – so this one will be entertaining until the end. Kentucky 24, Mizzou 21.
