Challenges for Vanderbilt

Georgia finished the 2018 season with an 11-3 record. Georgia played Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, falling 35-25. The Dogs deserved to be in the college playoff but were relegated to just a Sugar Bowl bid. Can you imagine someone saying that 30 years ago? 30 years ago the Sugar Bowl was the golden prize of SEC competition but not anymore unless it is the Sugar Bowl’s turn to host the title game of the CFP. A deflated Georgia team fell to Texas in the Sugar Bowl, 28-21.

The Bulldogs return 6 starters on both sides of the ball. The dogs have one of the best QBs the nation in Jake Fromm. Fromm passed for over 2,700 yards, 30 TDs and just 6 interceptions a year ago. Georgia also returns its top rusher for 2018 in DeAndre Swift (1,049 yds, 10 TDs). The Dogs will be minus their top 3 receivers from a year ago. Georgia returns 4 of 5 offensive linemen starters.

On defense, Georgia lost 3 of 4 linebackers, 1 of 3 defensive linemen and 3 of 4 of the defensive secondary. UGA’s top 3 tacklers from last season are also back.

Vanderbilt’s challenge for this game is namely Georgia. One of the best teams in the nation to start the season. It being the season opener for VU gives the Commodores a chance to put some stuff in that the Dogs might not be expecting. Vandy was more secretive than ever before in their recent preseason practice period. If Vandy can play smart and use its weapons it might be able to play close and possibly even win the game. Georgia is the heavy favorite though.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 6:30 PM CT (7:30 PM ET). Watch on the SEC network.
