Georgia football three keys: Florida

Three keys Georgia

Georgia football meets Florida on Saturday in Jacksonville. Here are your three keys to a Bulldog victory.

By Steve Wright

In comfortably the most interesting game of the weekend, the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (4-1) face the No. 8 Florida Gators (3-1) in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (usually).

Fix the QB problem

As soon as expected starting quarterback Jamie Newman opted out of the season due to Covid-19 we worried that the position would be an issue for the Bulldogs. This is a team that is national title level good at so many other positions, but Stetson Bennett simply hasn’t progressed as Kirby Smart would have hoped. Bennett was not good against an admittedly opportunistic Kentucky defense. The 14-3 score showed how ugly the game was in general, with Bennett going 9-of-13 or just 131 yards and with a couple of picks. He has to be better because that won’t get it done against a Gators team with designs on winning the SEC East.

Slow down Kyle Trask

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask – on the other hand – has been one of the best players in the country so far this season. The whole Covid issue with the Florida squad has cooled his Heisman momentum in a big way, but Trask has passed for over 1,300 yards with 18 touchdowns and just two interceptions so far in 2020. He is in the form of his life and he will not give the Bulldogs defense many chances to make a play. When you add in the hybrid weapon that is Kadarius Toney – he has 380 yards and seven scores on just 30 touches so far this season – then you see the task that the Bulldogs have ahead of them when it comes to getting the Florida offense off of the field.

How healthy are the Bulldogs

As if it isn’t enough that the Bulldogs have been picking up injuries on the field all season, the news of the motorcycle accident that saw safety Richard LeCounte end up in an ICU kind of sums up this season in terms of the health of the Georgia team. LeCounte – who earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a 13 tackle and one fumble recovery performance against Kentucky – is just one of five starters from Saturday’s game with injury concerns heading into this one. Working the correct pieces into the correct spots will be Kirby Smart’s biggest challenge in Jacksonville.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 2:30 PM CT (3:30 PM ET). You can watch this Georgia football game on the CBS Network.
