South Carolina Three Keys: Vanderbilt

Three-keys-USC

The South Carolina Gamecocks visit Vanderbilt on Saturday in Nashville. Here are your three keys to a Gamecock win over the Commodores.

By Don Yates

1. Take Vandy seriously

It would be easy for the Gamecocks to come into Nashville yawning. South Carolina has absolutely dominated Vandy since the Gamecocks joined the SEC back in the early 90s. But this Vandy team gave Texas A&M fits in College Station so the Commodores do have some ability. They also have several 2019 starters returning from injury for this game. While USC has had a firm grip on this series, they have lost to Vandy before and Vandy is way overdue a win.

2. Pressure Seals

Ken Seals is a true freshman starting quarterback for Vandy. He’s done decently for the Commodores so far this season.. for a freshman. Against A&M and LSU, he has gone a combined 31 for 54 (57%) for 263 yards and two touchdowns. He has thrown four interceptions. If the Gamecocks frustrate Seals and force him into making poor decisions it could help to unravel the Vandy game plan.

3. Block Odeyingbo

Dayo Odeyingbo is a 6-foot-6, 280 senior pound defensive end for the Commodores. A preseason All-SEC pick (2nd team), he is the top returning player in the SEC in tackles for losses (12). He currently leads the SEC in quarterback pressures with three. Simply put, it’s rare to find someone with Odeyingbo’s size, quickness and athleticism on a Commodore football roster. Carolina needs to ensure that he is blocked on every play.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 11:00 AM CT (12:00 PM ET). Watch on the SEC Network.
