Challenges for Vanderbilt
South Carolina has always been a tough nut to crack for Vanderbilt. The Commodores are 4-25 in the series since it started in 1961. In 28 meetings with the Gamecocks since USC joined the SEC in 1992 Vandy has won just four contests. In that same time period, Vandy has 11 wins over Kentucky, nine wins over Ole Miss, six wins over Tennessee and four wins over Georgia. You could argue that all of those teams except for maybe Kentucky have generally had stronger programs than South Carolina since ’92. Vandy needs to kick the door in on the series and get a win on Saturday.
On the field wise, while Vandy has improved some in third-down conversion rate (40%) over last season, the reason they are not scoring much is that they are lacking in explosive plays. These are plays that go more than 20 yards on run and 25 yards for passes. If VU can increase their large gain plays it’ll help them get more points.
Saturday‘s game kicks off at 11:00 AM CT (12:00 PM ET). Watch on the SEC Network.
