Georgia Football Three Keys: South Carolina

Three keys Georgia

Georgia faces South Carolina on Saturday in Athens. Here are your three keys to a Georgia win over South Carolina.

By Steve Wright

The Georgia Bulldogs are back on the field this Saturday as they are set to take on South Carolina in an
SEC East clash. Georgia will be looking to keep the momentum rolling after a 43-14 win over Tennessee
last time out.

Key 1 – Start quicker

One of the (few) issues for Georgia so far in 2019 has been the Bulldogs tendency to start slowly. Kirby Smart has addressed this in press conferences, but for whatever reason it really seems to take the Bulldogs a quarter or so to get going. South Carolina isn’t a good enough team to take advantage of this – Georgia will pile on the points late – but it is a concern with bigger matchups getting closer and closer down the road.

Key 2 – Keep the rushing defense tight

The Bulldogs have been winning games by making the opposition one dimensional and grinding them down. This is an effective way to get into the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs are allowing just 59.6 yards per game on the ground while rushing for 250 per game. South Carolina allows 139 yards rushing while carrying the rock for 203.8 yards per contest. Both of those stats sit well in the favor of Georgia. If the Bulldogs continue to play lockdown defense against the run, then they win this by at least three scores.

Key 3 – Don’t keep South Carolina in the game

The easiest way to lose a football game is through turnovers and penalties. Georgia is the better team here and the Bulldogs have been excellent this year at keeping the ball safe behind dominant offensive line play. Jake Fromm needs to continue to make smart decisions – and high percentage throws – allowing the running game to take over in the second half. South Carolina has enough about it to keep this tight in the first half, but only Georgia mistakes will allow this to be a contest over the second 30 minutes.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 11:00 AM CT (12:00 PM ET). Watch on the ESPN Network.
