Wright’s Renegade SEC Football Picks

Wright's Renegade SEC Picks

This was a better week for me but just an alright week for the league. The LSU win over Texas was huge, but a huge statement could have been made if Texas A&M had been able to take down Clemson. It also wasn’t ideal that both Tennessee (BYU) and Vanderbilt (Purdue) lost games that appeared to be toss-ups heading into the weekend.

By Steve Wright

Last week’s record: 11-2

Overall record: 19-6

Exact score predicted: 0

Misses: Clemson over Texas A&M (Not shocking) and Purdue over Vanderbilt (A little shocking).

Closest Pick: BYU 30, Tennessee 27. Actual score was BYU 29, Tennessee 26. Just two points off in total.

Saturday, September 14

Arkansas State @ #3 Georgia – This Arkansas State squad has an offense that can score points. They have put up 36.5 as an average over their first two games. That scoring will be ideal for them in the second half when Georgia is already up by five or six touchdowns. Georgia 55, Arkansas State 21.

Kansas State @ Mississippi State – This is one of the better games of the day. Kansas State has been brutally efficient in disposing of Nicholls State and Bowling Green, with the running and passing games both looking high end. Kylin Hill looked great last week for MSU as he went for 123 yards and a score on the ground. Tough one to call that could have late drama. Kansas State 31, Mississippi State 27.

Chattanooga @ Tennessee – The most must-win game of must-win games for Jeremy Pruitt. Tennessee has actually been better than the fans calling for Pruitt’s head think and this will be the game where QB Jarrett Guarantano breaks out. As long as this is over by the fourth quarter the Vols will be fine. Tennessee 48, Chattanooga 17.

#2 Alabama @ South Carolina – The Alabama offense has been in midseason form since the end of two quarters against Duke. South Carolina is throwing out a freshman quarterback in Ryan Hilinski who is starting his second-ever game and who will be facing a defense loaded with first-round NFL draft picks. If Alabama gets on top early this will be ugly. Alabama 51, South Carolina 17.

SE Louisiana @ Ole Miss – The Ole Miss offense played well last week, but the defense gave up too many yards against an Arkansas side that still isn’t very good. This won’t be the easiest FBS over FCS win you will ever see, but Ole Miss will have too much in the end. Ole Miss 31, SE Louisiana 17.

Colorado State @ Arkansas – It is still weird that the Arkansas offense just isn’t getting anything going consistently. The players seem to be there, but the running game has no drive and the passing attack isn’t stretching the field. If Colorado State can keep their turnovers in check then it will be a rude awakening for an Arkansas side already looking at a rough year. Colorado State 28, Arkansas 24.

Kent State @ #8 Auburn – This is the game where Bo Nix needs to iron out his play and find his consistency. This is an offense that needs him to improve rapidly with SEC play just around the corner. The defense will be lights out, but can the offense start rolling? Auburn 40, Kent State 10.

#9 Florida @ Kentucky – This would be a much more interesting game if Kentucky QB Terry Wilson hadn’t suffered a season-ending knee injury last weekend. The result is that Troy transfer Sawyer Smith will be starting for Kentucky against a Florida defense that had 15 sacks through two games. That is a mismatch. Florida 31, Kentucky 17.

Lamar @ #16 Texas A&M – This will be the tonic that A&M needs after never really being in the contest against Clemson last time out. Kellen Mond was expected to do big things given his performance against the Tigers in 2018, but he was the reason that the Aggies fell behind on the scoreboard early. Expect a big bounce-back game here. A&M 52, Lamar 7.

Northwestern State @ #4 LSU – The question isn’t if the Demons will win this game, it is if they have enough about them to score a single point. LSU, by the way, might have a claim to be the best team in the country after two games. Watch this team carefully over the next few weeks. LSU 55, Northwestern State 3.

SE Missouri State @ Missouri – Mizzou is taking on the double directional state school in a classic case of a paid for scrimmage. Expect the Tigers to dominate the Redhawks in this one. Mizzou 55, SE Missouri 10.
