Kentucky Football Three Keys: Toledo

Three-keys-Kentucky

Kentucky faces Toledo on Saturday in Lexington. Here are your three keys to a Kentucky win over Toledo.

Key 1 – Step Up And Shine on Defense

Kentucky lost a boatload of players from last season, particularly on defense. The Wildcats need guys to step up and fill the void with minimal drop-off in performance. Kentucky may have quality players to fill those positions but those players have to produce and not just hold a position. That’s seven new starters on defense that have to do their jobs to continue Kentucky’s improvement in football.

Key 2 – Stop Guadagni

Toledo has a dual-threat quarterback in Mitchell Guadagni. In an injury-shortened season in 2018, Guadagni passed 1,053 yards and 13 touchdowns in seven games and ran for 428 yards and three scores. This is where Key No. 1 plays an important role. New Wildcat starters must not all Guadagni to have a big game.

Key 3 – Play Clean Ball

It’s the season opener for both teams and there are going to be mistakes. However, those should be few and far between. If you saw the Florida-Miami game you likely witnessed one of the sloppiest games in the history of college football. Kentucky needs to avoid turnovers and stupid late-hit penalties that quash good defensive efforts.

Kentucky should win this game by double-digits. That won’t silence the UK naysayers who predict a return to the old days of 5-7, 6-6 seasons for the Cats. In game three of the season (Florida) UK has a chance to prove that they are still for real.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 11:00 AM CT (12:00 PM ET). Watch on the SEC network.
