Here are some score predictions for Week 2 of the FBS season:
Saturday, September 8
(18) Mississippi State @ Kansas State – The Bulldogs put up the most points in the conference in Week 1, scoring 63 in a dominating 63-6 win over Stephen F. Austin. The Wildcats are always tough in Manhattan, but they were beset by penalties in an opener that they very nearly lost to FCS school South Dakota. Maybe the Wildcats overlooked the Coyotes, but it is hard to see past the 618 yards of offense that Mississippi State put up in Week 1. Mississippi State 42, Kansas State 28.
Vanderbilt vs. Nevada – The Commodores got off to a sneaky good start in 2018 as they handled a very good Middle Tennessee quad 35-7 in a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. Nevada crushed Portland State 72-19 in its opener, but the Vandy defense will have too much given that they held the Blue Raiders to under 300 yards of total offense in Week 1. Vanderbilt 35, Nevada 21.
(1) Alabama vs. Arkansas State – Alabama will have no problems with a Red Wolves squad that is not as good as the Louisville team that the Crimson Tide took to task last week. Tua Tagovailoa will be out by halftime. Alabama 55, Arkansas State 10.
(24) South Carolina vs. (3) Georgia – The Bulldogs and Gamecocks face off in an early test to see who will be the frontrunner for the SEC East this season. The Bulldogs rolled up 508 yards of offense in a game with a shortened fourth quarter against Austin Peay, while South Carolina went for 557 offensive yards behind Jake Bentley against Coastal Carolina. This should be a doozy. Georgia 35, South Carolina 28.
Ole Miss vs. Southern Illinois – The Rebels were supposed to struggle to struggle against Texas Tech, but a combination of 336 yards for Jordan Ta’amu through the air and 204 yards for Scottie Phillips on the ground was just too much for the Red Raiders. The Salukis are a very solid FCS program, but the Rebels offense is just too dangerous for an upset. Ole Miss 48, Southern Illinois 24.
Tennessee vs. ETSU – Tennessee needs a bounce back win after getting their clocks cleaned by West Virginia in the only defeat of any SEC team in week one. They get a needed win here. Tennessee 28, ETSU 10.
Texas A&M vs. (2) Clemson – This is a fascinating contest. Clemson boasts an NFL level defensive line and skill at every position, while Jimbo Fisher began his Aggies coaching career with a 59-7 demolition of Northwestern State. RB Trayveon Williams was beast as he rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns, so expect him to see plenty of the ball against the No. 2 team in the nation. An upset win here would almost validate the monster contract given to Fisher when he was hired, but is it too soon for the Aggies to pull of that kind of result? Texas A&M 31, Clemson 28.
(11) LSU vs. SE Louisiana – LSU might have been the biggest surprise of any SEC team in Week 1 as they upset a Miami team fancied by many to do big things in 2018. Their 27-3 halftime lead was a sign of their dominance, a dominance they will repeat in Week 2 behind the running of Nick Brossette. LSU 38, SE Louisiana 0.
Missouri vs. Wyoming – The first outing of the new, slower Missouri offense looked much like it did for most of last season as the Tigers put 51 points up against UT Martin. Wyoming is tricky because it runs an opportunistic and aggressive defense that will go after the ball, but QB Drew Lock is too good at this point to be baited into easy turnovers. Missouri 49, Wyoming 14.
(7) Auburn vs. Alabama State – Auburn struggled the last time it faced an FCS squad and only squeezed past Mercer 24-10 in 2017. This time the Auburn running game will take over and the winning margin will be much more impressive. Auburn 42, Alabama State 0.
(25) Florida vs. Kentucky – Is this the year that Kentucky finally beats Florida on the gridiron? The Kentucky rushing attack looked great against Central Michigan, but their quarterback play is a huge concern going against a Florida defense that allowed just three passing yards to Charleston Southern in Week 1. Florida 35, Kentucky 14.
Arkansas @ Colorado State – The offensive signs were great for new Arkansas head coach Chad Morris as the Razorbacks crushed Eastern Illinois 55-20 on opening day. The Hogs will bomb the ball on the Rams no matter if Cole Kelley or Ty Storey is the quarterback, and Colorado State will not be able to keep up. Arkansas 49, Colorado State 20.
