Ole Miss Football Three Keys: Tulsa

Ole Miss three keys

The Rebels have looked progressively better each week, rolling to a 3-0 record to start the season. They now get a test few would have expected when the schedule was announced as the 2-1 Tulsa Golden Hurricane comes to town.

Here are the three keys to an Ole Miss win over Tulsa:

Stop Davis Brin

Anyone who predicted that Tulsa would have the No. 1 passing attack in the country heading into Week 4 gets themselves a cookie. The Golden Hurricane has been lights out through the air, and much of that has been down to the passing range and accuracy of quarterback Davis Brin.

Brin has completed 79-of-119 passes for 1,206 yards. He has thrown 11 touchdowns to just one interception, and he is at the helm of an offense that has gone for 413 yards per game through the air in 2022. This will be the first test for a defense that has faced overmatched opponents on that side of the ball in Troy, Central Arkansas, and Georgia Tech.

Front Seven Pressure

The best way to stop Brin is to unleash the hounds on defense. The Tulsa offensive line hasn’t seen anything of the standard of the Rebels’ defense yet this season. Ole Miss is 5th in the country in sacks per game (4.33) and shuts down the run as they are No. 12 in tackles for a loss (8.7). This aggressive, well-coached unit loves setting up shop in the offensive backfield and making momentum-shifting plays.

Go With The Hot Hand

What has been interesting about the Ole Miss offense is that the Rebels have completely shifted their style in 2022. Lane Kiffin wants to pass the ball – there is a reason that Matt Corral was so dangerous in 2021 – but Kiffin has realized that his best play is often to run the ball.

The Rebels run for 272 yards per game. That is a stat good for No. 5 in the nation, No. 3 in the nation if you only count games that involve two FBS schools. As good as Tulsa is offensively, the Rebels have bad against the run on defense. They give up almost 150 yards per game on the ground, and that number will go up on Saturday.
