Auburn Football Three Keys: San Jose State

Three keys Auburn

A pair of 1-0 teams face off here as Auburn (a three-touchdown favorite) takes on visiting San Jose State.

Here are the three keys to an Auburn Tiger win:

Unleash Tank Bigsby
Early season Tank Bigsby is the best version of Tank Bigsby. Bigsby has such a pushing running style that the later Auburn gets into the season, the more nagging injuries he has to play through. The running back was elite against Mercer, rushing for 147 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries.

That is the type of workload that head coach Bryan Harsin would like to assign here. Get Bigsby his touches, build a lead, then get him out of the game.

Contain Chevan Cordiero
Spartans’ quarterback Chevan Cordiero is good enough to cause Auburn some problems. He is a dual-threat guy, more adept as a scrambler than a passing threat. He was under pressure all day in the Spartans’ 21-17 win over Portland State, but that is how he likes to play. He wasn’t particularly efficient, but he will make a play or two if the Auburn pass rush – which was hit and miss against Mercer – doesn’t show up.

Focus on this One
Yes, Penn State is next up, but how many times in college sports have we seen a team fall to an inferior opponent because they are looking ahead?

Auburn isn’t yet in the position in terms of personnel where it can afford to have some of its best players cruise through and still win. San Jose State is overmatched here, let alone the fact that they are traveling across the country (and time zones) for this contest. That doesn’t, however, mean this is a guaranteed win if Auburn isn’t focused.

Saturday‘s game kicks off at 5:30 PM CT (7:30 PM ET). You can watch this SEC football game on the ESPNU Network.
