LSU Football’s Three Keys to 2022 Success

LSU Three keys

It all fell apart for the LSU Tigers over the course of the last two years. The 2019 National Champions were bad in 2020 and maybe even worse in 2021 where they finished dead last in the SEC West. Ed Orgeron is gone and Brian Kelly brings his gaudy 92-39 record from Notre Dame to take on the SEC.

Here are the three keys for LSU in 2022:

Replace the Departures
LSU lost plenty when Coach O disappeared last October. More than a dozen players transferred out of the program including a number of key contributors from the 2021 roster. Chief among these were starting quarterback Max Johnson (Texas A&M) and starting cornerback Eli Ricks (Alabama).

It was so bad that LSU had to play a wide receiver at quarterback in their 42-20 Texas Bowl loss to Kansas State. Kelly has had to look under the sofa cushions to find players as he worked on the recruiting trail to fix a damaged roster.

The first area of business for Kelly is to find a quarterback. It looked like being a two-man battle after Kelly was able to convince twice-injured incumbent Myles Brennan out of the portal and into a showdown with second-year player Garrett Nussmeier. That changed in the spring when Jayden Daniels of Arizona State suddenly entered the portal. Daniels was sold on LSU by Kelly and brings over 6,000 yards passing, almost 1,300 yards rushing, and 45 total touchdowns worth of experience to the table. Daniels should win the job and give LSU a dual-threat force behind center.

The Defensive Line Must be a Force
There are a lot of position groups with question marks for this LSU squad. One group that is expected to be SEC-level, and good out of the gate is the defensive line. In Ali Gaye and BJ Ojulari the Tigers have a one/two pass rush punch as good as any in the entire country. The Tigers were last in the SEC in takeaways in 2021 with 12. They will pass that total comfortably this fall as long as the defensive line is as advertised and gets quarterback pressure as expected.

The LSU Tigers open their 2022 season on September 4 at home in a game against Florida State.
