Scouting Report
Vanderbilt (8-11, 0-6 SEC) fell to South Carolina 90-64 on Saturday in Columbia. Vandy led for most of the first couple minutes of the game but with 17:38 remaining in the first half USC took a 7-6 edge. The Gamecocks, who would never trail again game, took a 45-35 lead into halftime. The lead hit 20 at 71-51 with 7:25 remaining. With 2:53 left the Gamecocks went ahead by 25 at 83-58. The Gamecocks showed little basketball chivalry, launching a three in the final minute for a rare eclipse of 90 points. At least the USC starters were out of the game by that time.
Aaron Nesmith (23 ppg) is the Commodore’s and SEC’s leading scorer, however, he is out for the season with an injury. In his absence Saben Lee (15.9 ppg) has taken over that role. Freshman forward Dylan Disu leads Vandy in rebounding 5.6 rpg. For the season Vandy is shooting 43.2% from the field, 32.8% from 3-point range and 67.6% from the free throw line. Vandy is eighth in the SEC in scoring averaging 72.9 points a game. The Commodores are 12th in the SEC in scoring defense allowing 73.9 point per contest. Vandy is dead last in field goal percentage defense (46.4%) and last in 3-point shooting defense (34.8%).
Kentucky (15-4, 5-1 SEC) defeated Texas Tech 76-74 on Saturday in Lubbock. The game was close in the first half with the two team trading the lead several times. Kentucky led 36-34 at the half. In the second half UK led by as much as 10 points but in the final minutes of regulation the Red Raiders pulled the score closer. Tech eventually tied the score at 63 with 2:40 left in regulation. UK held a 64-63 lead with 28 seconds to play but a Tech free throw tied the game at 64 and game headed to overtime. UK built a 6-point lead with 3:21 remaining in the overtime period but Tech battled back to tie the score at 74 with 31 seconds to play. Two Nick Richards free throws put the Wildcats on top 76-74. A late defensive play by Ashton Hagans prevented the Aggies from tying the game again.
UK is averaging 75.7 points per game so far this season and allow 65.2 points a contest. Nick Richards leads the Cats in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg). The other players also average at least 13 points a game including Ashton Hagans, Immanuel Quickley and Tyrese Maxey. Kentucky as a team is shooting 46.4% (2nd SEC) from the field, 32.4% (5th SEC) from 3-point range and 77.1% (2nd SEC) from the line.
Kentucky is the clear favorite in this game. This Vandy team is significantly behind all 13 other SEC teams in talent, experience, size and depth.
