Scouting Report
Texas A&M (9-9, 3-3 SEC) fell to Oklahoma State 73-62 on Saturday in College Station. The Aggies led this game most of the first 10 minutes of the game. OK State took the lead with 10:25 remaining in the half. The Cowboy headed to the locker room at half with a 34-26 edge. The Cowboys dominated the second half leading by at much as 21 and coasted to their 10th victory. Guard Isaac Likekele led the OK State in scoring with 13 point. Most of his scoring were from field goal range. Emanuel Miller led the Aggies with 11 points.
Forward Josh Nebo leads the Aggies in scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). Six-foot-7 guard Savion Flagg is the team’s second leading scorer (10.7). A&M’s biggest strength is its defense. The Aggies currently limit opponents to just 63.4 points a game. That’s fourth best in the SEC. Texas A&M is fourth in the conference in field goal defense (39.3%) and ninth in 3-point defense (30.5%). The Aggies are last in the SEC in scoring offense scoring just 61.1 points a contest. They are 14th in the league in both field goal accuracy (40.1%) and 14th in 3-point accuracy (26.1%). The Aggies rank at or near the bottom of the SEC in most of the other SEC statistical categories.
Tennessee (12-7, 4-2 SEC) fell to Kansas 74-68 on Saturday in Lawrence, KS. These two teams traded leads in the first ten minutes of the first half. However, with 9:21 remaining in the first half the Vols took a 14-13 lead and would keep that edge until 4:17 remaining when the Jayhawk retook the lead at 27-26. Kansas then built a 37-30 lead at the half. Kansas would go on to lead by as much as 10 in the second half. Tennessee narrowed the lead to five inside a minute to play but it wasn’t enough. Yves Pons led the Vols in scoring with 24 points. Kansas’ Devon Dotson paced the Jayhawks with 24 points.
Jordan Bowden leads the Vols in scoring at 12.6 points per contest. John Fulkerson is the Vols’ second leading scorer for the season averaging 11.5 points per game. Josiah-Jordan James is the Vols leading rebounder pulling down 5.8 boards a game. Tennessee is currently No. 1 in the SEC in scoring defense (59.8 ppg). A big reason for that is that the Vols are very stingy at allowing opponents to make field goals (38%, No. 1 SEC). For the season, the Vols are hitting almost 45% of their field goals, 32.9% of 3-point shots and 71.9% of free throws. This is a Vol team that seems to be improving as the season progresses. They gave Kansas fits on Saturday. UT could end up among the top 3 or 4 in the league before its over.
Tennessee is the clear favorite here playing in Knoxville. They are a more consistent, well rounded team than A&M. However, UT can’t sleep on the Aggies. Anyone can beat anyone on a given night in the SEC except for under-manned Vandy.
