Scouting Report

Georgia (11-9, 1-6 SEC) fell to Missouri 72-69 on Saturday in Columbia. Missouri led this game for most of the first 10 minutes but Georgia took an 15-14 edge on a pair of Tyree Crump made free throws with 10:52 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs went on to lead for the remainder of the half by as much as 18 points. Georgia held a 42-30 lead at the half. Ten minutes into the second half the Bulldogs still held a formidable 61-49 lead. The Tigers then began to cut into the Georgia lead before finally taking a 66-65 lead with 2:20 remaining in the game. The game was tied at 69 with a minute to play but a Xavier Pinson layup sealed the Tiger victory. Dru Smith led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points. He made 3 of 6 shots from 3-point range. Anthony Edwards topped the Bulldogs with 23 points. The two teams were fairly even from the field and free throw line. The difference in the game came down to 3-point shots. Mizzou made 10 of 23 of those compared to Georgia 6 of 21.

Anthony Edwards (18.9 ppg) leads Georgia in scoring. He’s also the top 3-point shooting threat with 45 made threes. Forward Rayshaun Hammonds (12.8 ppg) is the only other double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Georgia has a solid offense and is fourth in the SEC in scoring offense (76.3 ppg). The Bulldogs are fifth in the conference in field goal percentage (45.0%). Georgia is 13th in the SEC in scoring defense (74.7 ppg). Georgia also struggles in field goal defense (13th, 45.0%) and 3-point defense (12th, 33.1%). Two more superlatives, Georgia is fourth in the SEC in assists (14.1 apg) and tied for second in steals (7.6 spg).

Texas A&M (10-9, 4-3 SEC) defeated Tennessee 63-58 on Saturday in Knoxville. Tennessee led most of the first part of the opening half. However, the Aggies were able to tie the in the final 30 seconds of the half on free throws by Jonathan Aku. In the second half the Vols retook the lead quickly and then built a 39-32 lead with 14:28 left to play. The two teams were tied or swapped leads several times late in the second half. Back-to-back threes by A&M inside the final 1:30 of the game tied and then suddenly put the Aggies up 56-53. The Aggies then made their free throws down the stretch to pick up the road win. Wendell Mitchell led the Aggies with 23 points. John Fulkerson’s 15 points led the Vols. Tennessee out-shot A&M from the field 46.7%-30.4% but the Aggies were 22/29 from the free throw line compared to Tennessee 10/15. The 12 more free throws made by A&M were the difference in this game.

Forward Josh Nebo leads the Aggies in scoring (12.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). Six-foot-7 guard Savion Flagg is the team’s second leading scorer (10.5). A&M’s biggest strength is its defense. The Aggies currently limit opponents to just 63.2 points a game. That’s third best in the SEC. Texas A&M is fourth in the conference in field goal defense (39.7%) and eigth in 3-point defense (30.3%). The Aggies are last in the SEC in scoring offense scoring just 61.2 points a contest. They are 14th in the league in both field goal accuracy (39.5%) and 14th in 3-point accuracy (34.7%). The Aggies rank at or near the bottom of the SEC in most of the other SEC statistical categories.

Georgia should have a slight edge in this one playing at home. The Bulldogs’ backs are to the wall and the Bulldogs desperately need a win. But A&M has proved to be a lot better than folks than many observers thought at the start of the season.
