Scouting Report
Auburn (24-5, 11-5 SEC) fell to Kentucky 73-66 on Saturday in Lexington. The Tiger’s J’Von McCormick led Auburn with only 13 points. Immanuel Quickley was the Wildcat’s leading scorer with 18 points. Quickley also had an impressive 12 rebounds. The stats were fairly even except Auburn had nine made 3-point shots to Kentucky’s two but UK made more free throws (27-13).
Despite the loss, Auburn is still having a great season. They could go deep into the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
Texas A&M (14-14, 8-8 SEC) fell playing on the road at Louisiana State on Saturday. LSU’s Skylar Mays tallied 24 points to lead the Tigers. Texas A&M had problems with turnovers with 13 while LSU had only a few (4). These Aggie turnovers resulted in the Tigers taking many more shots than the visitors and thus making more shots and scoring more points.
Josh Nebo leads the Aggies in scoring (12 ppg). Savion Flagg is the only other A&M player who averages in double figures (10.5 ppg). The Aggies average just 62.1 points per contest, worst in the SEC. They allow just 64.7 points per outing. Only Tennessee has allowed fewer points. A&M, with the burly 6-foot-9, 245 pound Nebo, limits opponents to just over 40% from field goal range.
Making the Big Dance seems like a pipe dream for A&M but they still have a shot if they beat Auburn and then win the finale regular season game in College Station against a shaky Arkansas team. They then would need to win at least two in the SEC Tourney to be safe.
This is Senior night for the Tigers. It’s hard to see Auburn losing to A&M in Auburn but it could happen but probably won’t.
