Scouting Report
Georgia (10-5, 0-2 SEC) fell to Auburn 82-60 on Saturday in Auburn. As in other games this season, Georgia led early by as many as eight points. But an Samir Doughty layup with 8:20 remaining in the first half gave Auburn its first lead at 18-16. Auburn would go on to lead 35-24 at the half. In the second half things got really uglier quickly with Auburn out-scoring the Bulldogs 11-5 to start the second stanza and give the Tigers a 48-29 lead with just under 16 minutes to play in regulation. The lead grew to 20 with 12:47 remaining on two Doughty free throws. Auburn led by as much as 26 points on the way to the Tigers third SEC victory in three tries. Anthony Edwards led all scorers with 18. Doughty’s 17 points led the Tigers. The Tigers also out-rebounded UGA 41-33.
Anthony Edwards (18.7 ppg) leads the Bulldogs in scoring. He’s also the top 3-point shooting threat with 32 made threes. Forward Rayshaun Hammonds (13.6 ppg) is the only other double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Georgia has a sound offense and is fourth in the SEC in scoring offense (78.7 ppg). The Bulldogs are also fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (46.1%). Georgia is 13th in the SEC in scoring defense (73.9 ppg). Georgia also struggles in field goal defense (13th, 43.6%) and 3-point defense (12th, 33.3%). Two more superlatives, Georgia is third in the SEC in assists (15.2 apg) and second in steals (8.1 spg).
Tennessee (10-5, 2-1 SEC) defeated South Carolina 56-55 on Saturday in Knoxville. This was a defensive battle with USC building a 16-10 lead with 8:21 to play in the first half. However, the Vols would go on a 9-0 run to take a 19-18 lead with five minutes to play in the half. A Jermaine Couisnard put the Gamecocks back up 24-22 with a little over a minute to play in the half. The Gamecocks led at halftime 26-25. In the second half South Carolina built a 39-31 lead with just under 14 minutes to play in the game. Jordan Bowden’s free throw with 9:56 to play in the game put the Vols back on top 42-41. Tennessee would go on to lead by as many as six with just over six minutes to play. South Carolina would get to within two points of the Vols three teams but never take the lead. Forward Jake Fulkerson led the Vols in scoring with 15 points. South Carolina big man Maik Kotsar was the game’s leading scorer with 17, most of those coming in the paint. The Gamecocks out-shot the Vols 33% to 26% from field goal range but the Vols won from 3-point range making six shots compared to two makes.
Guard Jordan Bowden leads Tennessee in scoring (11.8 ppg) followed by forward John Fulkerson (11.4 ppg). Bowden is the team’s top 3-point shooting threat with 26 made 3-point shots. 6-foot-6 Josiah-Jordan James is the team’s top rebounder (6.0 rpg). Tennessee is 13th in the SEC in scoring offense (33.3 ppg) and second in the league in scoring defense (59.3 ppg). The Vols are 9th in the league in 3-point shooting accuracy (31.6%) and 13th in the conference in field goal shooting (42.1%). The Vols are also second in the conference in blocked shots (5.9 bpg) and tied with Kentucky for first assists (15.3 apg).
Georgia’s played a tough opening SEC slate with losses to Kentucky and Auburn. This is not last season’s Tennessee team. They are a probably destined to be a middle of the pack SEC team this season. Meanwhile the Bulldogs are much improved. Georgia should win this game at home.
