Scouting Report
Arkansas (15-4, 3-3 SEC) defeated TCU 78-67 on Saturday in Fayetteville. The Hogs built a 24-18 lead late in the first half and then headed to halftime up 33-29. In the second half the Razorbacks never trailed and led by as much as 15 points. Arkansas survived the foul fest down the stretch making most free throws seal the win. Three point shooting was probably the difference in this game. Both teams made six 3-point shots during this game. However, the Hogs were way more efficient and accurate making 6 of 9 attempts (66.7%) while TCU went 6 for 19 making just 31%. Jimmy Whitt Jr. and Mason Jones co-led the Hogs in scoring, each with each with 20 points. Kevin Samuel led the Horned Frogs with 24 points.
Guard Mason Jones (18.4 ppg) is the Hog’s leader in scoring. Sharp-shooting Isaiah Joe (16.8 ppg) is the second leading points producer. Joe has 67 made threes so far this season. Jones also leads the Hogs in rebounds (6.1 rpg).
Arkansas scores an average of 74.1 points per game (6th SEC). Defensively, they allow 63.2 points per contest (3rd SEC). The Hogs like to shoot threes. They have taken 446 attempts from beyond the arc so far this season. Only Alabama (551), Vandy (482) and Auburn (492) have taken more. The Hogs not only can shoot the three, they can defend it. Arkansas is No. 1 in the conference in 3-point shooting defense allowing just 24.3% of shots to be made. Arkansas also leads the league in steals averaging 8.6 of those per game.
South Carolina (11-8, 3-3 SEC) defeated Vanderbilt 90-64 on Saturday in Columbia. Vandy led for most of the first couple minutes of the game but with 17:38 remaining in the first half USC took a 7-6 edge. The Gamecocks, who would never trail again during the game, took a 45-35 lead into halftime. The lead hit 20 at 71-51 with 7:25 remaining. With 2:53 left the Gamecocks went ahead by 25 at 83-58. The Gamecocks showed little basketball chivalry, launching a three in the final minute for a rare eclipse of 90 points. At least the USC starters were out of the game by that time. Justin Minaya and AJ Lawson each had 14 points to lead the Gamecocks. Saben Lee’s 17 points for Vandy led all scorers.
AJ Lawson leads the Gamecocks in scoring averaging 13.7 points per game. Maik Kotsar pulls down a team leading 6.3 rebounds a game. South Carolina as a team averages 70.8 points per game while allowing opponents 66.7 points per contest. For the season, Carolina is making 44% from the field, 31.1% from 3-point range and 61.2% from the line.
Arkansas playing at home should be the favorite in this game. The Hogs are better both offensively and defensively. Barring the Razorbacks sleep walking into this one they should prevail.
