Scouting Report
Ole Miss (9-4, 0-0 SEC) wrapped up its 2019-20 pre-conference schedule on Saturday with a 74-54 loss at Wichita State. The Rebels led briefly early in that game but were down by 15 at the half and trailed by as much as 22 points in the second half. The Rebels were co-led in scoring by guard Devontae Shuler and forward Khadim Sy, each with 12 points. Ole Miss struggled at shooting during the game hitting just 30% from field goal range and 22% from the 3-point arc. WSU limited the Reb’s top scorer Breein Tyree to just nine points. He averages over 16 a game this season. For the season, Ole Miss has made a respectable 45% from the field and 34% from 3-point range. Forward KJ Buffen is Ole Miss’ top rebounder with 6.5 a game. Ole Miss struggles at field goal defense (13th in the SEC) but is more respectable defending the three (5th in the SEC). Ole Miss also excels in the assists category where they rank second in the conference. Shuler leads the Rebels in assists with 4.2 per game. Tyree is the Rebels leading threat from three with 25 treys made (32%).
Texas A&M (6-6, 0-1 SEC) opened its 2019-20 SEC slate on Saturday with a 69-59 loss at Arkansas. In that game the Aggies trailed by 9 points at the half before coming as close as 2 points in the second half before succumbing to the Razorbacks. The difference in that game came at the 3-point arc. The Aggies made just 4 of 14 3-point attempts while the Hogs were 10 for 29. Six-foot-9 forward Josh Nebo is the Aggies’ leading scorer (11.3 ppg). Against the Razorbacks he had 10 points. Only one other player, guard Savion Flagg, averages more than 10 points per game. Texas A&M struggles in the 3-point game. They are fourth from the bottom nationally in 3-point shots made (59) and have made just 23.8% of their attempts. The Aggies also sit at the bottom of the SEC in field goal shooting, making just 38.7%. A&M is stout defensively, however, holding opponents to just 61.5 points a game.
It looks like A&M is really down this season. Kind of like Vanderbilt was last season (and might be again this season). I expect Ole Miss to win this game. The Rebs just have more weapons and are a little more well rounded as a team.
