Alabama (9-7, 2-2 SEC) upset rival Auburn 83-64 on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa. This is a game in which the Crimson Tide led from start to finish. In the first half other than the opening moments, the closest the score would be is 11-10 with 12:56 remaining in the half. With 2:07 remaining in the first half a Javian Davis made free throw put the Tide up by double-digits, 32-22. At halftime Auburn still wasn’t totally out of the game trailing 36-27. In second half Auburn again narrowed the Bama lead to 42-40 on a free by Isaac Okoro with 14:50 to play. A 17-8 run over the next seven minutes put Auburn up 59-48 with 7:03 remaining in the game. The Tide team then made their free throws down the stretch to extend the lead and get the victory. Alabama essentially won this game at the line. The Tide hit 78% (29/37) of its shots while Auburn made just 17 of 30 (56%.7). Alabama out-shot the Tigers from field goal range 31.7% to 42.9%. Guard Lewis Jr. led Bama with 25 points. Okora was the Tiger’s leading scorer with 13.

Guard John Petty Jr. leads the Tide in scoring averaging 16.7 points per game. Another guard, Kira Lewis Jr., is not far behind Petty at 16.2 points a contest. Petty also leads the Tide in rebounding pulling down over 7 a game.

As a team, Alabama is No. 1 in the conference in scoring offense (83.2 ppg) and last in the conference in scoring defense (78.7 ppg). The Crimson Tide is second in SEC basketball in 3-point shooting making of 36% of shots. They make an average of nearly 11 threes a game. Bama ranks fifth in the SEC in assists (14.5 apg). The Tide is 11th in the league in field goal defense (42.0%) and 12th in steals (6.6 spg).

Missouri (9-7, 1-3 SEC) fell to Mississippi State 72-45 on Tuesday night in Starkville. The Bulldogs shut down the Tigers defensively and didn’t allow a score until nearly five minutes into the game. State led 26-9 with 7:27 remaining in the first half and would lead 40-20 at the half. In the second half, after a Missouri mini-run, the lead hit 20 again at 51-31 on a Tyson Carter 3-pointer. The deficit bulged to 30 points at 66-36 with 5:13 to go on a Carter jump shot and the Bulldogs would glide on to a 27-point victory. Reggie Perry led the Bulldogs in scoring with 23 points. Carter added 15. Foward Kobi Brown paced the Tigers with 14. Brown was the only Missouri player to reached double digits. The Bulldogs won this game with a stifling defense and by outshooting the Tigers. MSU outshot Mizzou 54.5% to 34.7% from the field and 38.5% to 20% from 3-point range. The Bulldogs also won the rebounding war 36-24.

Guard Dru Smith leads the Tigers in scoring (11.4 ppg). He also is No. 1 in the SEC in steals with 37 and is over 87% for his free throws. Another Smith, guard Mark Smith, is the second leading scorer (11.1 ppg). Mark also is the rebounding leader of the team (4.7 rpg). Yes, there is a third Smith on the team, forward Mitchell Smith. Missouri is among the worst teams in the SEC in scoring offense averaging just 66.9 points per contest. However, the Tigers are the best team in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 59.7 points a game. Mizzou is No. 4 in the SEC in field goal defense (38.8%) and No. 3 in 3-point defense (29.3%).
