Team/Game Analysis

Kentucky (22-5, 12-2 SEC) topped a solid Florida team 65-59 on Saturday in Lexington. Kentucky’s top scorer was Immanuel Quickley who tallied 26 points. Quickley, one of the best shooters in college basketball, made 4 of 6 3-point shots during the game and all six of his free throw attempts. Keyontae Johnson led the Gators with 19 points. Kentucky just made more shots in this game except for one more 3-point shot made by the Gators. The Gators won the rebounding battle 30-27 but it was pretty even. UK won the turnover battle picking up three less than UF.

This Kentucky team is following a familiar script of the past few years. John Calipari brings in a ton of new, talented freshmen. The team struggles at times early in the season while Coach Cal coaches them up. Then in the latter part of the season the team begins to dominate other SEC teams. It’s hard to believe that this team lost to Evansville back in November, in Rupp Arena. Evansville’s record is currently 9-20 overall, by the way.

This Kentucky does have some veterans. Junior Nick Richards has developed into a dominating inside player averaging 14.3 points and 8 rebounds per game. He has double digit (10) double-doubles this season. Sophomore EJ Montgomery is another inside player who has seen significant action. Another sophomore, Ashton Hagans, is considered one of the best defensive guards in the nation and he can score. Graduate Nate Sestina is on the verge of joining the UK 1,000 point club. Immanuel Quickley is another second-year player. Quickley is one of the most accurate shooters in the nation and can make shots from just about anywhere on the opponent’s side of the court.

Texas A&M (14-12, 8-6 SEC) defeated Mississippi State 87-75 on Saturday in College Station. Josh Nebo led the Aggies with 31 points. Tyson Carter led State with 19. This was a surprising win by Texas A&M over a very well coached Bulldog team. The Aggies won this with outstanding shooting from both the field (59.6%) and 3-point range (52.9%).

Josh Nebo (11.9 ppg) is a player who missed much of the early season due to an injury. After he came back the Aggies started winning. Nebo is 6-foot-9, 245 pounds and very athletic. Savion Flagg (10.0 ppg) is the team’s other double digit scorer. Where the Aggies cause problems for opponents is with their defense. A&M is currently allowing opponents just 64.1 points per game, that’s second best in the SEC.

Most would be quick to write off A&M having a chance to win this one but it could happen. The Aggies have big man presence in the middle to defend Nick Richards. The Aggies are on a 3-game winning streak and their confidence is growing.

Kentucky should win this game. If the Aggie shots are falling mostly on target there could be trouble though.
