Scouting Report
Kentucky (13-4, 4-1 SEC) defeated Arkansas 73-66 on Saturday in Fayetteville. The two teams traded leads early in the first half, however, Kentucky took a 6 point lead with 8:15 left in the first half. The wildcats led for the rest of the half. In the second half Arkansas retook the lead at 46-44 on a pair of Mason Jones free throws. Kentucky, however, took the lead for good on Tyrese Maxey’s free throws with 5:58 to play in the game. Kentucky won this one off of rebounding (47-29). The Wildcats also had better shooting. Kentucky out-shot the Hogs 44%-33% from field goal range, 36%-31% from behind the arc and 74%-66% at the free throw line. Nick Richards led the Cats in scoring with 17 points. Arkansas’ Jones led all scorers in the game with 19 points.
Guard Tyrese Maxey leads the Wildcats in scoring (13.7). With 20 made threes, Maxey is also a threat from beyond the arc. Immanuel Quickley (13.7 ppg), Nick Richards (13.4 ppg), and Ashton Hagans (13.1 ppg) are UKs other key scorers. Richards is the team’s leading rebounder, pulling down 7.8 per contest. Kentucky is fifth in the SEC in scoring offense (74.1 ppg) and fifth in scoring defense (63.8 ppg). The Cats have improved some from three point range making 32.3% of their attempts (5th/SEC). But from field goal range the Cats make a over 46% of shots, third best in the conference. UK also leads the conference in free throw shooting hitting on 76.6%. The Cats are also solid rebounders with a plus 6.3 rebounding margin.
Georgia (11-6, 1-3 SEC) fell to Mississippi State 91-59 on Saturday in Starkville. State led the entire game except for a brief time early in the first half. State’s lead reached with 20 (66-46) with 7:58 remaining in the game and 30 (81-51) with just under four minutes to go. The MSU dogs won this win their superior inside game hitting almost 68% for field goals. Neither team relied heavily on the 3-point shot but State hit twice as many of those shots (6) as Georgia (3). Forward Reggie Perry led State in scoring with 22 points. Perry also pulled down 12 rebounds to complete a double-double. Georgia’s Anthony Edwards led the Bulldogs with 19 points.
Anthony Edwards (19.1 ppg) leads Georgia in scoring. He’s also the top 3-point shooting threat with 38 made threes. Forward Rayshaun Hammonds (13.8 ppg) is the only other double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Georgia has a sound offense and is fourth in the SEC in scoring offense (77.6 ppg). The Bulldogs are fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (45.8%). Georgia is 13th in the SEC in scoring defense (74.3 ppg). Georgia also struggles in field goal defense (13th, 44.4%) and 3-point defense (12th, 32.5%). Two more superlatives, Georgia is second in the SEC in assists (14.8 apg) and second in steals (7.9 spg).
This is a game where Kentucky should be the clear favorite. They are playing in Rupp and Georgia has problems defending. If UK sleep walks through the game it could get hairy though. The Dogs can put points on the board.
