Scouting Report
Georgia (10-4, 0-1 SEC) dropped its opening SEC contest with a 78-69 loss to Kentucky in Athens on Tuesday. In the first half the lead changed several times before the Bulldogs were eventually able to build a 37-31 halftime lead. Georgia would maintain that lead until the 8 minute mark in the second half when guard Immanuel Quickley’s 3-point shot put the Cats up 58-57. Kentucky then outscored the Bulldogs 20-12 for the remainder of the game to notch the win. Freshman guard Tyrese Maxey and junior forward Nick Richards co-led the Cats in scoring with 17 points each. Kentucky out-shot Georgia 50% to 42% from the field and 50% to 21% from 3-point range. Interestingly, the Cats also hit 50% from the line to Georgia’s 69%.
Anthony Edwards (18.7 ppg) leads the Bulldogs in scoring. He’s also the top 3-point shooting threat with 30 made threes (31.9%). Forward Rayshaun Hammonds (13.7 ppg) is the only other double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Georgia has a sound offense and is third in the SEC in scoring offense (80.0 ppg). The Bulldogs are also third in the conference in field goal percentage (46.6%). Georgia is tied for 12th in the SEC in scoring defense (73.4 ppg). Georgia also struggles in field goal defense (13th, 42.9%) and 3-point defense (10th, 30.0%). Two more superlatives, Georgia is first in the SEC in assists (15.6 apg) and second in steals (8.2 spg).
Auburn (14-0, 2-0 SEC) defeated Vanderbilt 83-79 on Wednesday night in Auburn. The two teams traded leads early but Auburn led at the half 42-38. In the second half the Tigers seemingly had the game under control with a 14-point lead with 7:59 remaining. However, four 3-pointers by Vandy in the final five minutes of play led to the game being tied at 79 with just under a minute to play. Auburn players hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final minute to escape with a win. Vanderbilt’s Saben Lee led all scorers with 27. He was 3 of 3 from 3-point range. Auburn’s Isaac Okoro paced the Tigers with 23. The key stats in this game were second chance points: Auburn 23, Vandy 0. The Tigers also out-rebounded Vandy 39-28. Vandy’s Aaron Nesmith was 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
Guard Samir Doughty leads the Tigers in scoring (15.6 ppg). Okoro is the next leading scorer with 13.6 points a game. Center Austin Wiley is the top Tiger in rebounds, bringing down over 9 per game. Auburn is second in the SEC in scoring offense (82.1 ppg) and first in the conference in scoring margin (+15.4). The Tigers are also second in the league in rebounding marging (+7.8) and first in blocked shots (6.2 bpg).
Auburn kind of slept walked against Vandy. They’ll be bouncing off the walls for Georgia. Auburn should win.
