Scouting Report
Kentucky (24-5, 14-2 SEC) defeated Auburn 73-66 on Saturday in Lexington to solidify their lock on the 2019-20 SEC regular season title. Sharp shooting Immanuel Quickley, who wasn’t as sharp from 3-range in this game as normally, led the Wildcats with 18 points. J’Von McCormick topped the Tigers with just 13 points. It’s too bad that fouls decide games these days but Kentucky won this game at the free throw line. Not only making more free throws than Auburn (27-13 but preventing the Tigers from getting boatload of free throws like had in the Auburn win earlier this season. In that game the Tigers had over 40 free throw attempts.
Kentucky is sixth in the SEC in scoring offense (74.6 ppg) and fourth in the conference in scoring defense (65.4 ppg). Like most John Calipari coached teams at Kentucky, the Wildcats have steadily improved as the season progressed. Sharp shooting Immanuel Quickley is the Wildcat’s to scorer averaging over 16 points a contest. Although he didn’t hit as many threes as normal against Auburn, he’s one of the best shooters in the nation.
Tennessee (16-13, 8-8 SEC) is running on fumes in the Vols quest to make a return trip to the Big Dance. They stayed alive with a big 63-58 win over Florida on Saturday in Knoxville. John Fulkerson led the Vols with 22 points. Kerry Blackshear Jr. topped the Gators with 20 points. This game was fairly even statistically. The Vols force five more turnovers than Florida and were more accurate from the field (52%-47%). Florida won the rebounding battle but rebounds sometimes do not provide a good indicator on how a team performed in a game. If a team is missing a lot of shots than the other team they likely will get many more defensive rebounds than their more accurate shooting opponent. Tennessee also had seven blocks shots to the Gator’s two.
The Vols are the stingiest team in the SEC defense wise, allowing just over 63 points a game. Meanwhile, Tennessee is next to last in scoring offense, scoring just 66.7 points a contest. Jordan Bowden (13.7 ppg) and John Fulkerson (13.1 ppg) are the Vols’ two leading scorers. Tennessee is leading the league in assists (14.7 apg) and blocked shots (5.8 bpg).
This is a game that Kentucky should win however, the Wildcats can’t afford to take Tennessee lightly. While UK is a certain lock for an NCAA berth, Tennessee is the epitome of a bubble team. If the Vols lose this game they probably won’t be in the Big Dance short of a deep SECT run. In short, their backs are against the wall and those teams can be dangerous.
