Team/Game Analysis
Alabama (15-12, 7-7 SEC) defeated Ole Miss 103-78 on Saturday in Oxford. This game was a track race. Bama led 45-31 at the half. In the second half the two teams combined for over 100 points. The Rebels weren’t able to catch up to Alabama. The Tide made an impressive 13-of-30 3-point shots to seal the win. John Petty Jr. make 4 of 6 treys and Jaden Shackelford hit on 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Two other Bama players had at least two made 3-pointers. Ole Miss’ to scorer was Breein Tyree with 28 points.
Alabama as a team relies on simply out-running and out-scoring opponents. They do this because they have very little inside presence. There is little need for defense, the focus is offense! offense! Who cares that the Tide is dead last in the SEC in scoring offense, allowing 4 1/2 more points per game than one SEC win Vanderbilt? Well, they probably do care but it’s not the priority.
Alabama has taken 810 three points shots this season. No other SEC team has yet to eclipsed the 700 mark in attempted threes. Kira Lewis is the top points producer for the Crimson Tide (17.4 ppg). John Petty Jr. (15.3 ppg) and Jaden Shackleford (14.8 ppg) are the other two leading scores for the Tide. Petty Jr. is the biggest threat from 3-point range with 83 made threes so far. He’s hitting on an incredible 44.6%. Shackelford has 74 made threes. Three other players have at least 30 made threes.
Mississippi State (17-10, 8-6 SEC) was dominated by Texas A&M on Saturday in College Station. The Bulldog’s two leading scorers were Tyson Carter (19) and Robert Woodard II (18) points. The Aggies won this game simply because they managed to get a few more baskets than State. A&M ended up with two more field goals, one more 3-point shot made. Seven more made free throws also helped give the Aggies a little cushion.
In 6-foot-10, 250 pound Reggie Perry the Bulldogs have a dominate inside presence. Perry is the team’s top scorer (17.4 ppg) and rebounder (9.8 rpg). Carter (13.5 ppg) and Woodard II (11.6 ppg) are the Bulldog’s other two leading scorers. State is the third best 3-point shooting team in the SEC, hitting on 33.6% of shots. However, the Bulldogs are 13th in the league in 3-point attempts, behind only Kentucky. Having a monster like Perry in the middle and an old school head coach like Ben Howland is probably why State shoots so few threes.
This is another game that is difficult to predict. These are two very different but formidable SEC clubs. You’ve got a middle of the road team both offensively and defensively (MSU) taking on the best offensive team and worst defensive team (Bama). I’m going with the home team here but if Bama’s shots are falling mostly on target they will probably win.
