Team/Game Analysis

Ole Miss (13-14, 4-10 SEC) most recently was defeated at home by Alabama 103-78. Breein Tyree led the Rebels in scoring with 28 points. John Petty Jr. produced 21 points to lead the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s hit on 13 of 30 3-point shots and that was the likely difference in this game. Bama led by 14 at the half and coasted to victory. This has been a disappointing season for second-year head coach Kermit Davis and the Rebels. After winning 10 SEC games and going to the NCAA in his first season in Oxford, short of an SEC Tournament miracle, the Rebels are pretty much destined to miss this year’s Big Dance.

Why the drop off from 2018-19 season? It’s likely because of the absence of a dominating big man. The Rebels are third from the bottom in rebounding margin (-0.5) and dead last in the league in blocked shots. Terence Davis could be the player that the Rebels are really missing from the 2018-19 season. He wasn’t a big guy but he was a solid rebounder and could block shots.

The Rebels are not without effective players though. Breenin Tyree is scoring almost 18 points a contest. Tyree has averaged 30 points over the past four games played. Guard Devontae Shuler is another jewel for the Rebels. In Saturday’s game with Bama Shuler had 11 points, four rebounds and a team-high three steals.

Ole Miss does some good things. We aren’t sure what happened at Bama but the Rebels are second in the SEC in 3-point shooting defense. The Rebels are also fourth in steals averaging 7.4 spg. Ole Miss also excels in assist to turnover ratio (4th, 1.0).

Auburn (23-4, 10-4 SEC) defeated Tennessee 73-66 on Saturday in Auburn. Jordan Bowden led the Vols with 28 points. Auburn’s Samir Doughty topped the Tigers with 22 points. These two teams about even statistically. Auburn just made a couple for field goals and free throws and one more three pointer than Tennessee. The Vols got to the free throw line 17 times and made 16 of them but Auburn hit on 18 of 27 charity attempts. Tennessee won the rebounding battle 37-28 but the Tigers had fewer turnovers than the Vols 24-11.

This Auburn team looks like it’s about the same as last year’s Tiger squad that probably should have been in the national title game if not for horrendous officiating at the end of the national semi-final. Samir Daughty leads the Tigers in scoring, averaging over 16 points per contest. Isaac Okoro (13.1), J’Von McCormick (12.0) and Austin Wiley (10.5) are the Tigers’ other top scorers. Wiley gives the Tigers a formidable inside presence at 6-foot-10, 260 pounds. He’s the team’s chief rebounder (9.2 rpg) good for second in the SEC. He also has 41 blocked shots. Auburn has six different players who have made at least 20 3-points shots led by Doughty with 46.

Auburn is third in the SEC in scoring offense (79.0 ppg) and 10th in the league in scoring defense (70.9 ppg). While Auburn takes a lot of threes, they are third from the bottom of the SEC in 3-point accuracy (30%). Auburn is also third from the bottom in 3-point defense (32.5%).

Playing at Auburn the Tigers should be clear favorites to win. Auburn Arena itself is fairly new but nothing overly special. The Auburn fans can get rowdy though. They are learning how to support Tiger basketball. Again, Auburn likely wins but Ole Miss does have some weapons. Vandy almost upset Auburn about a month ago in Auburn. That was before Vandy’s more recent improved competitiveness. If that Vandy team could take Auburn to the wire Ole Miss should also have the capability to compete with the Tigers. Remember too, Auburn had to go to overtime to defeat the Rebels in Oxford a few weeks ago.
