Scouting Report
Vanderbilt (9-17, 1-12 SEC) fell to Tennessee 65-61 on Tuesday night in Knoxville. Freshman guard Jordan Wright led the Commodores with 23 points. Jordan Bowden and John Fulkerson co-led the Vols with 17 points each. Tennessee won this game at the line hitting 8 more free throws than Vandy. The Commodores were able to keep the score close by hitting eight 3-point shots to the Vols’ four.
Vandy’s Aaron Nesmith (23 ppg) is the Commodore’s and SEC’s leading scorer, however, he is out for the season with an injury. In his absence Saben Lee (17.3 ppg) has taken over that role. Freshman forward Dylan Disu leads Vandy in rebounding 5.6 rpg. For the season Vandy is shooting 42.6% from the field, 33.2% from 3-point range and 69.3% from the free throw line. Vandy is ninth in the SEC in scoring averaging 71.6 points a game. The Commodores are 13th in the SEC in scoring defense allowing 74.3 point per contest. Vandy is dead last in field goal percentage defense (46.5%) and also last in 3-point shooting defense (35.4%).
Georgia (13-13, 3-10 SEC) defeated Auburn 65-55 on Wednesday night in Athens in what was likely the second biggest SEC upset of the season, after Vandy’s win over LSU. Anthony Edwards led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Meanwhile, J’Von McCormick paced the Tigers with 22 points. The Bulldogs’ seven more made free throws and three more 3-point shots swung the game in Georgia favor. They two teams were dead even in rebounds (45) and turnovers (15).
Anthony Edwards (18.9 ppg) leads Georgia in scoring. He’s also the top 3-point shooting threat with 60 made threes. Forward Rayshaun Hammonds (12.4 ppg) is the only other double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Georgia has a solid offense and is fourth in the SEC in scoring offense (75.7 ppg). The Bulldogs are fifth in the conference in field goal percentage (44.9%). Georgia is 12th in the SEC in scoring defense (73.8 ppg). Georgia also struggles in field goal defense (13th, 44.6%) and 3-point defense (12th, 32.7%). Two more superlatives, Georgia is fifth in the SEC in assists (13.8 apg) and tied for second in steals (7.7 spg).
Vanderbilt hosts Georgia in what might be the Commodores’ best chance to earn a second SEC victory. Vandy is playing better and better under Jerry Stackhouse. This one should be close so we go with the home team.
