Scouting Report
Florida (13-8, 5-3 SEC) defeated Vanderbilt 61-55 on Saturday in Nashville. Florida held the lead through most of the first half leading by as much as eight points. However, vandy would battle back and cut the Gator lead to as little as five before time ran out of the Commodores. Scotty Pippen Jr. led the Commodores with 15 points. Keyontae Johnson topped the Gators with 20 points. The Gators out-shot the Commodores from both 3-point range (39.1% to 23.3%) and in field goals (40.7% to 37.8%). The ‘Dores made 75% of free throws compared to the Gators 61.5%.
Kerry Blackshear is the Gators top scorer so far this season averaging 14.0 points per game. He’s also the Gator’s top rebounder (8.3 rpg). The second top points producer is Keyontae Johnson (13.3 ppg). Team statistics wise, Florida doesn’t shine or struggle in any particular statistical category. Florida does struggle in the area of blocks (9th, 4.1 bpg) and assists (12th, 11.7 apg) and steals (11th, 6.2 spg).
Georgia (12-9, 2-6 SEC) defeated Texas A&M 63-48 on Saturday in Athens. This game was fairly close in the first half. A&M held a 12-7 lead with 11 minutes to play in the half. Georgia took a 17-14 lead with 5:14 to play in the first half on an Anthony Edwards 3-pointer. The Bulldogs headed to halftime on top 24-21. Georgia maintained that lead throughout the second half, building as much as a 17-point lead. Edwards paced the Bulldogs with 29 points. Wendell Mitchell topped the Aggies with 13 points. The Bulldogs won this game by out-shooting and out-rebounding the Aggies. Georgia was also able to shut down the Aggies’ best player, Josh Nebo, who was limited to only 2 points in 25 minutes of play.
Anthony Edwards (19.3 ppg) leads Georgia in scoring. He’s also the top 3-point shooting threat with 49 made threes. Forward Rayshaun Hammonds (12.5 ppg) is the only other double digit scorer for the Bulldogs. Georgia has a solid offense and is fourth in the SEC in scoring offense (76.3 ppg). The Bulldogs are fifth in the conference in field goal percentage (45.0%). Georgia is 13th in the SEC in scoring defense (74.7 ppg). Georgia also struggles in field goal defense (13th, 45.0%) and 3-point defense (12th, 33.1%). Two more superlatives, Georgia is fourth in the SEC in assists (14.1 apg) and tied for second in steals (7.6 spg).
If this game were being played at Georgia the Bulldogs would be the favorite, however, playing in Gainesville the Gators are more likely to win.
